Ampeg VH-140C: weird chorus problem

Hey everyone!

I just came home with a '91 Ampeg VH-140C 2x12 combo. I was able to talk the seller down to $200 because of some weird problem with it's built in chorus effect. When I turn on the chorus on either channel there is a drastic drop in sound level, and the volume of it seems to be directly related to where the reverb setting is at. It doesn't really sound like the chorus is affecting (or effecting) the signal, in fact it becomes squelched, thin, and ultra saturated in reverb. I don't quite understand what could even cause this problem? The light indicator under the chorus knobs shows that it is "working" (lights up and gently flickers when I play harder), but the sound is just completely messed up.

This is a stellar amp overall, and nothing else is wrong with it. If you could help in any way, that'd be awesome! Here is a picture, and the amp's reference guide.
