Amplifier Discussion / Re: Frequency response

This web site has a pretty critical review of a Sunn Coliseun bass amp - oddly enough this guy loves vintage Acoustic amps and has posted frequency response plots (using RTA software) of ACC amps - I believe he dosen't have an issue with the frequency response of an ACC320. For reference, maybe he should measure the Fender Studio Bass amp he has on his site?

Amplifier Discussion / Frequency response

I continually read that soild state amplifiers don't not have the low frequency response of tube designs. WTF is this about? Urban legend? Is this just an issue with certain legacey designs? I guess it's time to fire up the old HP 8903B and make some measurements.

you aren't Jim are you?

My battery knowledge is weak but I do remember something about deep cycling lead acid batteries and lifetime/reliability. You can not deep cycle a car battery without significantly reducing its life. What about NiMh - I believe they are designed for deep cycle application - is the lead acid gel cel also a deep cycle technology?? You have to figure in the # of charges you will get from any battery technology - not cheap if it dies fast.......

wow over $100 just for batteries - portable but not cheap.

For a Field Effect Transistor: Gate is usually the input - drain and source are interchageable

Mmmm what would a $50K solid state version of the above offer?

1kW/channel (let's say into 8 ohms)

DSP for anything and everything - heck what about a gigantic FPGA with mulit core RISC processing (this thing will have several HDMI ports at the very least) - for any effect imaginable plus output EQ/non-linear processing for your loudspeaker "system" and more.

Water or peltier cooled - no noisey fans

OLED front panel display - make it big enough so you can have it look like it has tubes in it  xP

Titanium chassis/hardware

?????????????? :loco

Amplifier Discussion / Re: RCA 7155 TO-66 package?

I usually buy from Digikey - never had a problem in the last 2 years. I haven't done so but I would guess high current HFE is not going to be the same as original (large OEM die) and you could verify this with a TEK 576 or simialr (curve tracer).

TO-66 packaged transistors are unobtainium. If you find a substitute that works, in that package, consider yourself lucky.

I can think up a few marketing buzz words for your project: use the phrase/words - "discrete", "field-effect transistor", "Blumlein - anything",etc, etc.
Or you can have my idea of a "solid state" stereo vibrato machine - you can build a "real vibrato" effect with "discrete" transistors. Nice exotic wood case and you're home and dry  ;) ;) ;)

QuoteTo put things in perspective, the official minimum wage for a regular factory worker in Guangdong Province is 0.39 U$ an hour.
Specialized workers and supervisors get a mind boggling 0.69U$ an hour

As they say junk in junk out.

Yes, it a great environment for low cost and untrained labor. If there is a skill set there you bet some western influence paid for it and it's more expensive to keep around then you let on. Remember the labor law (LCL) in 08'? Right now the Chinese government is desperately trying to double those slave wages because inflation is coming along with a bimodal wealth distribution. Oh, but really, you should already be in Vietnam by now.

First order high pass filter(s) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-pass_filter

Use non-polar capacitor with sufficent working voltage. You might try experimenting with a higher order - Linkwitz-riley http://www.linkwitzlab.com/. Best solution is bi-amp since the filter (passive design) "interacts" with speaker response.

Well its water under the bridge as far as getting Line6 to support this isssue - the Spider III is no longer in production. Still think a $.50 encoder would help the problem.

Quotejust rewrite some lines of code so the processor stays at the last known value, integrates to filter the noise, etc. Oh well.
Ah but if were that simple why not just provide new SW/FW to fix the problem? The solution would be simple to "integrate" if that did solve the problem - without adding latency or timing issues.

Well either way DSP, and smaller fine pitched SMT components, are here to stay. Though it is not beyond the resourceful person to rework and even reprogram these designs - assuming the value of your labor isn't an issue ;)

They use a potentiometer in that application? Why not and RPG or optical encoder - opps I forgot keep it cheap and cheerful. What about the Spider IV's? Same issue?
