Other tubes
« on: March 13, 2008, 08:47:57 PM »
So I'm thinking my next tube amp will be in the 2-5 watt range and I don't want to deal with more than 100-120v or so.  The 50C5 is a tempting choice putting out 2.3w @ 120v.  Any other tubes that meet this criteria?

50C5's are great little tubes I used them in my first tube amp build, but I would really recommend stepping up to the 6BQ5 or better known as EL84. you"ll will have to step up to 240-270volts but the difference in tone is worth it.

Joecool, you´re in the right path. 50C5´s and many other "radio output tubes" are cheap, plentiful, and "output iron" is easy and cheap to get. Usualy 1 to 2 watts (perfect bedroom power) but you can always add an SS 50 or 100 W power stage after them, keeping the tube sound.

I figured I was on the right path, and other tubes that I didn't mention?  Like I said, 2-5 watts and capable of running properly around 100v.

Yeah, 50C5's are fairly good at lower voltages , however running your preamp tube(or tubes) at lower voltages (although it is possible) can produce problems(12AX7's) like voltages ranging from 190V to 240V.
