This works off a 12 v supply or 8 'D' cells. I want to use NiMH AA cells instead which gives only 9.6v. Any downside apart from less volts and shorter life? Or do I buy rechargeable D's? I dont turn it up past 2 in practice situations and still have power supply where needed
Mainly used for mandolin

Roughly speaking, D cell will last 5 times longer than AA.  Going to NiMH improves that, so you might get 1/3 of the hours that D cells would give.  Is that going to work for you?
Other than that, D cells can offer much higher peak current.  It's hard to say whether the NiMH will have sufficient peak capabilities, if not, you will get clipping on loud notes.  That is something you won't know til you try it, but it sounds like it may not be a problem if you are not playing loud.

I think I'll try it for a few practice sessions at least on low volume. Maybe with 10 cells to get the full 12v. I do get several months of weekly sessions out of the D's but they are expensive and less widely available.

Charging weekly would not be too onerous
