Looking around for a pre-amp/amp

Hi everyone, this is my first post so I will give everyone a little background on myself.
I'm a computer professional, been doing system admin and MS SQL stuff for the past 10 years. I took electronics in college right out of high school but I enjoy computers more. I continue to tinker with hobby electronics and wood working. I recently completed a DIY CNC router from 80/20. I have been making PCBs and some wood projects but recently I have decided to help my 10 year old son graduate from guitar hero on the x-box to a real guitar. I took on a more detailed project, a telecaster guitar.
I'm looking for a very simple DIY schematic for a pre-amp/Amp.
The guitar body I have does not have a pocket for a pre/amp so I will have to do the preamp and amp together. I see most serious guitar players are using tube amps but for now I just want to simple solid-state amp to start. I probably have most of the parts in my collection and what I do not have Digikey is always available.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi drools, start by reading this post:
http://www.ssguitar.com/index.php?topic=1834.0
It started with excellent aspirations, but way over what can be accomplished at home, and ended into something quite practical, a good first amplifier, still powerful enough to annoy yhe neighbours.
From there on, the sky is the limit.
Are you making your guitar on the CNC machine?

Yep, I sure am along with whatever else I can come up with :)
I decided a Telecaster would be a good project.
