Tubes and Hybrids / Re: tube preamp for metal
May 25, 2016, 09:38:35 PM
Thank you for all the help. I will definitely take your suggestions seriously as you guys are alot more experienced then me. Cost also happens to be an issue here so kits may not be the best option, i havnt looked into it yet though. My electronics teacher in school is helping me with this project and is getting me the tubes and tube sockets. Im going to be working construction half the summer to get money for this build to hopefully have it done before the summer is out. Thank you very much guys

I understand that. Ive built a distortion pedal (not a complicated one) and ive designed and built some solid state amps. The closest thing to amplifier tubes ive worked with is nixie tubes. I was really just seeing how complicated something like a twin 12ax7 preamp would be compared to the single 12ax7 preamp im going to build first.

Thanks this helps alot. Ill try the marshall

Thanks for the schematics but that looks a little too complicated for me. Im going to use a single 12ax7 tube preamp for starters

Tubes and Hybrids / tube preamp for metal

can someone point me in the direction of a simple tube preamp with alot of gain and can get some overdrive out of it? preferably not too complicated as im new to tubes. yes i am going to start with a single 12ax7 preamp build but im doing research for an amp im designing (to eventually build) and i need a preamp for metal.

I have searched everywhere ln the internet and it appears i can find schematics for every marshall amp except the one i want. Im looking for the marshall dsl40c. Can someone please help?

Tubes and Hybrids / Need a simple tube circuit
May 22, 2016, 02:46:51 PM
Im looking for a simple tube circuit for a guitar amp. I recently had a chance to play on a marshall 40 watt half stack and i instantlt fell in love. My favorite thing about it was the distortion i was getting when i turned the gain up, it was like variable distortion! I was wondering if i could find a circuit that had something like that where when the gain starts to go about halfway it starts to overdrive the tubes. I only need about 5 to 10 watts (special idea i have ill share in another thread) of power for this amp. Any ideas?

Thanks. I checked my chips and i lt appears i havnt blown any (yet) but i am still not sure whats wrong with my circuit. Should i try using a pc power supply that i know is +/- 12v?

So if i added like a single 3904 transistor stage before the distortion it should work?

Im looking for a simple distortion setting circuit i can add to my JFET preamp. I tried shunting 2 rectifier diodes to ground on the output for diode clipping but it didnt change the sound at all. So far ive been using my ibanez turbo tube screamer and i really like that sound. Heres my preamp circuit im using

Im assuming thats whats happening because im getting no sound and really rapid heat build up
#42
Even if im just trying to get sound out of it as a test i need a heatsink? And the question about production, im pretty sure these are knockoffs from china i ordered them at amazon.

The exact datasheet schematic is what i seem to have built (obviously not somwhere). I bought 20 chips im not that worried about them blowing lol. I apologize for the photography. The green wire is v+ and the blue wire is v- (ran out of red and black recently) the red wire is going to an 8 ohm speaker and the yellow wires are just jumper cables.

This is currently how i have it set up.

Pin 1: .1uf cap connected to the input and 22k resistor going to ground

Pin 2: 22k feedback resistor to pin 4 and 6.8k resistor going to 10uf cap to ground

Pin 3: just v- wire

Pin 4: 2.2 ohm resistor to .47uf cap to ground and speaker output

Pin5: just v+ wire

Chip seems to be shorting when i try to do the v+/v- supply trick with the batteries. Could it be a grounding issue? I have the breadboard grounded to the benchtop power supply i built but i dont know if thats actually connecting it to ground.

Thanks that helps alot for when i design my preamp.
