It mostly depends on value (size) of the capacitor.  For larger capacitors, electrolytic capacitors are the way to go.  On smaller capacitors I like to use polyfilm (rather than ceramic) as they are fairly inexpensive and also quiet for audio use.

Honey Amp / Re: Headphone jack and gain pads
April 17, 2023, 09:37:34 PM
Quote from: rockaffe on April 17, 2023, 02:31:14 PMHello everyone, I'm doing the veroboard layout for the honey amp but, as I'm not yet very familiar with reading schematics, I'd like to ask for some advice.
The first concerns the connection of the headphone jack, which I solved as follows:

You cannot view this attachment.

Is that correct?

The second concerns this part of the circuit:

You cannot view this attachment.

Does it mean that pins 1 and 8 of the IC need to be connected to lugs 1 and 2 of the gain pot?

Thank you!

Do you mean you are creating your own vero layout?  I haven't seen one for this yet.

Regarding the headphone jack, it is designed for a switching jack.  You have the blue line connecting two pins and it shouldn't do this.  It should go from board to the jack, then jack to the speaker.  When nothing is plugged in it goes straight to the speaker, when something is plugged in, it cuts off the speaker and only goes to the phones.

Regarding the gain pads, these can be left unpopulated.  The regular gain control goes inline at the start of the circuit (effectively a volume control before the preamp stage).  Those two gain pads are for increasing the gain of the power amp (lm386).  With a bunch of testing, I've found that I can get any more clean volume out of the lm386 at more than the stock 20x gain setting.  If you want more gain though, crank it up!

Amplifier Discussion / Re: Watts vs Volume (db)
April 14, 2023, 03:57:29 PM
Quote from: Lady_Azurewolf on April 11, 2023, 05:50:40 PMI am very very new to this whole topic and got myself a Woodstock GX-55R Amplifier the other day cheap from a second hand shop. Yep the question of watts came up. I   don't know how many watts it has.
But I have been told itno good for a bass guitar.
Yeah I don't even have half the knowledge of people here however I have found reading everyone's post absolutely fascinating.
Cheers all.

Go ahead and start a new thread and share a few pictures - specifically any labels or markings on the amp.  We should be able to help!

With a few pictures and some measurements (diameter of the potentiometer body as well as distance between pins), and then also if it is a knurled, smooth, or "flat d" post, and we should be able to help you find a potentiometer for you.

Vox has released new versions of the popular MV50 (not technically solid state as it uses nutube technology, but close) as well as the new Brian May amPlug (completely solid state).  Both units claim to have the "Brian May sound" and from the clips I've heard, they deliver in spades.  Definitely worth a look if you are a Queen fan, or really anyone who loves the cranked AC30 sound.

MSRP for the MV40 is $249 USD while the amPlug comes in at just $59 USD.

Blackstar has released another amp in the Amped series, the Amped 3.  Boasting 3 channels, reverb, 100 watts of power, and more gain than either the original Amped 1 or Amped 2, this might be for you if you're looking for heavy tones powered completely from your board.

If you are a gigging musician, this could be for you.  Otherwise it may be out of your price range.  Preorder is currently available at $599 USD.

Laney has put together a new pedalboard amp featuring two channels and a boost circuit.  Dubbed the Ironheart Loudpedal, this new Laney amp provides 60 watts of power running through a shared three band EQ and the aforementioned two channels.

MSRP is $299 USD.

Positive Grid has released the Spark Go.  This is a 5 watt version of it's popular Spark Mini.  It swaps the knobs for a few push buttons, and drops to a single speaker configuration.  All of the usability is basically the same though, including USB recording output and all of the effects and amp models controlled from your mobile device as per usual for the Spark series.  It's also a whole lot cheaper coming in at only $149 USD.

Blackstar has released the new Debut 50R.  This is a 50 watt, 1x12" combo, two channel, practice and gigging amp.  They use mosfet design to give the amplifier "tube like" sound.  I'm not sure I would call it "tube like", but it does sound nice in the clips.

MSRP is $249 USD - not bad for what you're getting here!

Schematics and Layouts / Re: Sunn Beta PCB
April 05, 2023, 09:14:52 PM
Quote from: Tassieviking on April 03, 2023, 04:53:29 PMI don't have any audio files so you can hear the 12w Marshall amp I made.
The PCB I made up is made so you can build all 5 versions I found schematics for, you just have to use the right components from the BOM.
I also changed the power amplifier so it can be made into a 30watt amp as well.
You can pick Lead, Reverb,Bass etc.

I was never a good player and I have bad arthritis in my hands now so I can't be bothered to make any sound clips.
But I love to make up PCB's and build stuff when I can.

To get PCB's made you just have to upload the Gerber to the PCB manufacturer, I personally have only used JLCPCB as they are a good price.
The one problem with JLCPCB is that you have to order 5 PCB's minimum of the same type, but it still works out cheaper then buying 1 PCB from most online shops so I just end up with spares.
The shipping can get very expensive with JLCPCB as well, but if you pick the cheapest postage they are ok, and still fairly fast (2-3 weeks).

I recommend you try OSHPark.  They aren't as cheap as overseas places, but still very reasonable.  Good example, I just did a mini board that is basically a strip with 6 connections points and two mounting holes.  A set of 3 boards cost me $1.50 shipped.

A video or even audio clip showing the issue would help as well.

Amplifier Discussion / Re: op amp voltage and tone

My experience is that higher voltages give you more clean headroom.  It doesn't seem to affect tone at all.

This isn't an amp I'm familiar with.  Any pictures or videos would be much appreciated!

Cor-Tek, current owner of DOD, has decided it would be a good idea to bring back some vintage gear.  Enter Tom Cram, inventor of the DOD 250 and a lot of other circuits, and here we are - the reissue!  The company claims they will be releasing as many as nine more old pedals.

https://www.gearnews.com/dod-250-overdrive-preamp-reissued-as-tom-cram-works-with-cor-tek/

Marshall has reissued their famous Guv'nor, Blues Breaker, Drivemaster and Shredmaster pedals.  These pedals are notable for me due to the Gov'nor's ability to run as an effective preamp in front of any solid state power amp stage.  The others are well-loved though and definitely deserve a solid look.

Street price is $249.99 USD for the Marshall pedals and a more modest $109.99 for the DOD 250.
