Amplifier Discussion / Re: What is this ic?

Why is the pinout puzzling for you?  It looked pretty straight forward to me.  And yeah, Dean Markley amps are pretty highly regarded around here, but thats mostly due to me lol.  I have one, and I've used others and I really love their sound.  They are also built rock solid.  As far as small practice amps go, I really haven't heard anything that I like better than my K-20X.

I don't have any preamps built into any of my chipamps, I use separate preamp boxes or no preamp.

Awesome.  No worries about taking a little while to respond, so far you are the only one out of 6 people that got the kits that has even posted about it.

It probably is a TL072 since Dean Markley used those in pretty much all of their amps.  It would be super easy to check if someone had one you could open up...  Any reason you wanted to know about the k-150?

Amplifier Discussion / Re: line 6 30W V's 75W

This is where it's all about what sound you like.  A lot of people like tube amps, and ONLY tube amps.  Some people (not many) like only solid state amps, and then within SS amps are also digital.  Each has their own spot, and as long as you like it, then it works.

As far as the 75w amp sound like the 30w at bedroom levels, it won't (most likely) be identical, but it should be close.

Amplifier Discussion / Re: Is this PT ok for LM3886 amp

Holy cow, thanks for the great explaination R.G.

I used a 44v (22+22 torroidal) and I get great sound/power.  I used a massively oversized 250VA (roughly 5.5 amps @ the nominal voltage) rated one though lol.

I'll talk to Brian asap and get back to you on that.

Amplifier Discussion / Re: 25 ohm pot replacement
October 25, 2006, 09:21:39 PM

Something similar to the ruby.  Basically the tail end would be just like the ruby, and the front end would be whatever you want.  I would just put a pot inline on the signal in of the amp before the cap.  Keep in mind you could just have no pot anywhere and just control the volume via your guitar knob.  I have built two little gems, one has a gain control knob and volume knob, the other is built into a pocket radio chassis so I can clip it onto my pants.  It has a jack to plug the guitar into, and a switch and thats it.  The switch connects pins 1 and 8 directly for full gain.  I almost always play at full volume since its not that loud anyway.  Sometimes if its at night I roll back the volume on my guitar.

Wow, a radio shack 30 watter, that's sweet.  Although its too bad, the radio shack right near me closed.

It's actually a rheostat, not a pot.  And you could use no rheostat at the end, and just have a pot in front of it for volume control.

LM1875 based amps put out roughly 25watts (+/- 5 watts depending on transformer).  I would look into doing one of those.  Brian from chipamp.com gave out some kits on here, and I think he may have some left as prototype boards.  If you're interested, let me know and I'll see what I can do.  You could also make your own PCBs, or possibly even perf one.  I know perfing a LM3886 is a bad idea as certain components need to be really close to the chip and make it hard, but the LM1875 doesn't look to be as difficult.  I myself have built a stereo LM1875, but it was with Brian's PCBs so it was easy.

The Newcomer's Forum / Re: Speakers
October 24, 2006, 04:27:34 PM
Technically speaking, any speaker can be used for guitar.  I've actually found that (other than guitar speakers) cheap speakers sound better a lot of times than hi-fi speakers on a guitar amp.  I pulled apart a small portable radio to get a 2.5" speaker for my little gem.  If you are looking to buy a cheap speaker in the 5" range or so, I would check out partsexpress.com

Maybe something like this:

Ideally you will want something that can produce tones below 70hz, and above 10,000hz.  If you want any sort of decent volume, you will want the best SPL rating possible.  Anything above 90db should be sufficient.

Awesome!  Do you have any sound clips/pics?  Sounds like you've made yourself quite the amp.  It's good to know that those LM1875 kits are going to good use.   8)

How did you use a LED/LDR setup in a wah?  Can we have some pics of the inside?  And maybe a schematic?  This thing is cool!
