Amplifier Discussion / Re: Insert spring reverb...
February 20, 2016, 03:18:27 PM
Kindly thanks for your answer Phil!  :)
Yes, i know, that particular tank is Accutronics 8bc2c1c or 8bc2c1f...
Agree with you, very trebly reverb... :)
My plan is to put reverb circuit in pathfinder chassis and use existing power supply from it .. And plan to mix in reverb .. if you have the time and willingness to help me to mix in your Tverb, that would be best option obviously, because how not to like better versatility? :D.. Or if would be easy and better way to add reverb in chain (like fx loop).. When i write better way, i meant without tone degradation...

Amplifier Discussion / Insert spring reverb...
February 18, 2016, 05:04:24 PM
Hello good people. Me again with my pathfinder voxy! :) After all rumble with my ear and brain wracking, i found that factory set up of mentioned "monster" is all i need.. But what about reverb, and spring one of course??? :) Not to mention that i draw pcb layout of Phat Verb, but... Stand alone unit which is greater than amp? Forget, unfortunately... Idea is to insert spring reverb section of session rockette 30, but with preserving that sound... Many things make me confucing:
First.. This one ic spring reverb (tl072), is the best sounding reverb i`ve heard... I have read Rod Elliot article, and because of that i amazed how Stewart Ward achieve that.. Strong way driving 190ohm impedance tank with single (ok, dual) op amp ..

Because of that my plan is to add that reverb drive and recovery to my pathfinder... Is it possible and where would be insert point... After tone stack or master volume or.. ? And which modification i must plan? Suspect on gain values...

Thanks in advance!

Amplifier Discussion / Add FX loop to Pathfinder
December 19, 2015, 07:04:20 PM
Well, i plan to add reverb pedal to this little Vox, and maybe would know where to predict FX return, but will leave this enigma to some of ssguitar expert which would be kind to explain me that...

And here is schematic:

What about http://www.fane-international.com/downloads/Fane%20Sovereign%206100%20DS030513.pdf ?

Is this speaker good and possible alternative?

Hello my friends,

I will post Schematic of this little Vox amp... I plan to use PhabbTone pedal in front of Pathfinder, and want to add swith to bypass completely and only tone stack.. This because i prefer pre, not post eq distortion, and because lack of mid control.. And of course because i find Phabbtone to be all i need for tone shaping.. :)

Question is where to add bypass switch?

Thanks for your answer...

What about this? Is this have any chance to be stable for guitar amp? Or if answer is no, what to improve for stability? I like this simplicity, but not for any price...

Currency profitable from banana republic!  :lmao:
I forgot to insert proper lug size for pots, like in alpha datasheet for 16mm diameter pots, and now is more safe, IMHO...

One more question Phill, pot related... On your schematic lugs on middle and bass pot are without connection, but on pcb is linked.. Is this regular?

Firstly .. You guys are my inspiration to end this thing exactly as it should be and I'm immensely grateful you for all of that!  :tu:  8|

Very appreciate your willingness and commitment to help me. In this I recognize myself .. Always felt good when someone transfer part of my knowledge and when that someone is happy because of that ...

To move on to answers!  :)

Phatt, I am on Mac OS X platform, and name of softwer I use is DIY Layout Creator, which is free, simple, and intuitive.. For my very small experience, is more than serviceable.  :cheesy:

Info link:
https://code.google.com/p/diy-layout-creator/

I have studied your suggestions in the attached picture, and here I upload revised PCB layout ... I hope that it is now a little bit better .. :)

Guys, will adopt all your suggestions and techniques in making PCB..

If there are objections or opportunities to improve the design, just shoot!  :cheesy: ;)

Regard, Mladen!

Thanks for suggestion Roly! :) Something like this? Very hard to find Poly Film, or any Poly- with pF values.. But i can try... What proper to choose for potentiometers? Which brand, diameter, Piher`s.. ?

Phill, you gave me a remarkable hour of electronics. Much of it is now clear, and many answers i got. I used your screenshot and practically crossed out PCB layout...  ::) I would love very much if you pointing me to possible errors... Also, i plan to use METALFILM resistors, due to a lower tolerance, and for pF value ceramic capacitors, while for nF value Wima MKS2.. Is this acceptable or there are better solutions? One more thing, the only unknowns to me about layout is potentiometers dimensions like Lug size, Diameter and Spacing..  :loco I would ask you to write me a most suitable, and also their labels.. Believe that`ll be a no problem to find them by the label...

Thank you for everything so far and advance for your answers Phill!

EDIT: Oh, sorry Phill, i forgot to write that i`ll use your Printer-Iron method, as is simple enough.. :)

Regards, Mladen.

Phill, i have zero experience on pcb designing! As this "pcb layout" by me clearly shows it. :) It's supposed to be my first pcb production tryout.. So it would obviously wait since my layout is bad... :/ Or Phill, if you were kind, and if i don`t ask to much, you may pleased me with pcb layout, because i suspect i`ll make it in resonable time... :/

Thanks anyway...

I noticed that the schematic you first attached is different from PCB layout, and these changes i recorded quickly and half glimpsed.. Red one values are from PCB layout..

Regards, Mladen.

Phill, you are marvelous! To mention J M Fahey too.. :) I saw PhAbbTone V4 schematic just after you attached, and via Line out jack from my Laptop through Return in to Session Rockette 30 amp heard awesome tone shaping.. All of this drive me to open some free tool and for the every first time go and try to design PCB layout for ypur PhAbbTone circuit... I know this is just a try, and sure contain many error, but if you have patience and desire, help me to made this acceptable... Well, please, spot the errors, and advice me what to change (sure, if i know how).. :)

Thanks Phill again for this updated circuit...

I have meny question especialy for you, but it will be time for that..

Cheers, Mladen

"Yeah, I could do all that" I replied, "but here's a novel idea; if I want value sound, why don't I just use valves?"

Thanks Roly,
Many times i was faced with this decision, but always stop because of following:
I do not like higher voltage and valve depreciation over time..  :-\

So i want to make a compromise... :)

Fair enough.  Just consider that the power amp does not sit there alone, it is part of the overall system.  Making special approaches to make the power amp more "tube-like" will be just one small step towards a good amplifier.  In my personal opinion, the speaker you use will have a far greater impact on your sound.  Also, the preamp will be a tremendous part of your sound - the guitar does not plug straight into a power amp.  So perhaps you could tell us the preamp you are intending to use this power amp with.  You mentioned practice amp earlier, so I assume you intend lower volume use, but do you also intend to gig with the amp?  A 25w amp is one thing, but if you operate the amp with the volume turned low, it will produce considerably less power than that.  In fact for bedroom use, 5 watts would be plenty.

Enzo,

I have to admit that for years i informed about what you've written to me .. And then gained just that kind of conclusions ... I have no doubt about the importance of the preamp and speakers role .. The only thing was somewhat remained unknown is the power amp and hence i concentrated on this question ... not because of importance for valve character .. :)

Yes, my intention is a gig-able amp as well.. I'm thinking to make PhabbTone pasive preamp or Jfet Bender preamp, even though the last one is in the development stage and i have dilemmas about schematic..  :-\

I don't disagree with you or those experts, however, in the context of the original poster's questions, I don't get the impression he is at the level of designing esoteric chip amp circuits to emulate tube gear.  I may be wrong.  So my answer was considering the needs of someone wanting to build a very basic circuit.

Mr. Enzo, if you read some of my latest posts, you may find that i`m in search for suitable solid state design who will able to produce good side of characteristic valve sound... as much as possible... IMHO i think that i close to that factors, so look for your generous help to carry out my wishes, in the form of ideas and suggestions, and I'll know how to realize... if I were good to design, I would had a desire to share it with you, but since I'm not, I'm here to explain you what I want, hoping that you will help me..

This teemuk Peavey PA example (Transtube variant) is good point of my original question..
Again, although I'm not proficient, I'm aware that (J M Fahey wrote) LM3886 datasheet amp is excelent example.. But, without current feedback...

So guys, help me with that esoteric valve like circuit! :D

Thanks again all of you... :)

Tnx ppl, i`m familiar with all of that schematics, and i am aware that many posts are written about this particular chip, but i want advice, exact LM3886 circuit which is best proved in practice for the guitar amp, taking into account the input and output impedance... And of course, the most important thing is how to design PSU to achieve about 20-25w output... (17v bipolar i guess)..
