Tubes and Hybrids / adding extra gain stages
« on: March 20, 2008, 04:23:42 PM »
Hi, im going to build an amp, and well, i want to use it without any pedals, kinda a amp to carry around, but the original schematic doesnt include a gain pot, possible due to few gain stages, it has just 2 gainstages in the preamp.
so what im thinking is to add an extra tube, so adding 2 more gainstages and between the two put a pot to control the gain.
now my doubt is, can i "just" add like that? or i have to see if, i dont know, the transformers will suporte the extra efford or something...
thanks  ;)

it will only hurt if you push it really hard, in nomal home use its ok i think  :)
saw other advantage of having it matched, was just above that link:
"Q: Why do I have to match speakers to the output impedance of the amp?
A: You'll get the most power out of the amp if the load is matched. "

theres the slight possibility of killing the transformer, but isnt very likely, theres difference in the sound...
well, found a better awnser:
from geofex.com - http://www.geofex.com/tubeampfaq/TUBEFAQ.htm#mismatch

hey, im still new at this diy stuff, so dont have much experience, but i already realized how different the parts can be! just some days ago i changed the pots of my guitar(im changing the whole electronics) and one pot was the size of the one i had before, other was bigger! i basicaly had to grab a drill and drill the hole bigger lol

other thing is buying in a fisicaly store... im never gonna go there anymore, i went there with the parts i wanted in a paper, especifying what part, value, voltage rate, they went and give me the stuff but didnt even care about the voltage rates, just gave what they had, and i ended up having caps rated at 10v.. and the circuit i was building was suppose to have 12v, i ended powering it with a 9v battery

for me its internet stores, ok it takes alot of time to reach home, but at least it comes what you choose  8)

the triodes at least are, the other i never worked with but looking through the scheme looked like was right also, but cant be sure about it. anyway, just try, its not like its gonna blow up if you got it wrong(hopefully  ;D)

Hey, i've build a ruby amp some time ago, but now i wanted to used it too drive some headphones. my doubt is if i connected "directly" the ruby to some headphones would i "kill" the speaker?? do i have to in some way soften the signal? i wanted to control also the distortion so the connection would be made after the chip... dont know if im making any sense..  :D
thanks all

the site i normally order stuff doesnt have that chip... :( (i normally use musikding) it hasnt got much variety.. do you know any european site that has it??

hey, i found of the 12U7 ( http://tdsl.duncanamps.com/show.php?des=12U7 )
the other couldnt find, do you know if any other type of tube can be used?

erhmm didnt know ehe
so what other chip would you advice? just need a bit more power, not alot more, the problem is cuz i got some free speakers but they basically suck! lol, im trying to build a battery amp.. so some chip that works on low voltages
thanks  :)

hi, just a doubt, if i wanted to add another lm386 in parallel, what input should i use? the pin2 or 3?

Amplifier Discussion / Re: doubt about effect loops
« on: March 02, 2008, 03:25:18 PM »
yes, i was talking about fisical placement sorry.
the layout is what im working on, im gonna build a combo and so i'll put the power transformers outside of the chassis, which should reduce possible interference. as you said, if the fx loop doesnt catch much interference, i'll probably put it after the eq. pots and before the powerswitch, and the power section away as possible, i think it will be well placed
gonna try the layout that way, and then show to see if its fine
thanks  ;)

Amplifier Discussion / doubt about effect loops
« on: March 02, 2008, 09:42:14 AM »
hello all! i have some doubts about where to place the effect loop in an amplifier. the only thing i know is that the signal circuit should be away from the power, but where exatly should i put the effect loop? right next to the input jack? a bit far away, after the eq. pots?
many thanks
