it looks to me that that is not a negative/postive power supply, just a positve rail.  hook your black to - and red to + and tell me if you get +24vdc.

I would start by reading Teemuk's book http://www.ssguitar.com/index.php?topic=711.0 very useful

I would also start simple and work your way up, maybe do a LM386 amp or some stomp boxes first.

The amplifier will not make a good guitar amp, it draws to many amps and you would have to create a power supply. The amp itself does not have tone adjustment and is meant to reproduce music as is and probally would not produce the correct harmonix for playing a guitar.

alright I know it is just interferance but I was able to pick up my local AM channel 740 when I was breadboarding my LM386 project after adding a 741 chip to it. Is this normal? it is pretty cool though.

Does it change when you turn the volume up or down, if you do not have your instrument jacked up does it make the noise and what about when your touching some metal part of the frame?

Talking about 40 D-Cell batterys that's about $80.00 dollars not so free.

If you plan on repairing it yourself I would start by making a short check lamp (standard light bulb wired in series) See picture.

Mount the items on a small board and insulate all wiring by using electrical boxes to not be exposed to high voltage/current.

start at a 60 watt buld and if it glows bright you have a short and the troubleshooting fun begins.

Mark,

yes a standard DPDT switch will work, think of it has two seperate switches put together.

Hook your LED + lead to one side of the switch and the other side other side and the switch to voltage then the Led - goes to ground.

make sure the led turns on when the gain is enganged.

Is the amp powering on at all? If it has a fuse have you checked it?

That is the great environmentalist banning all lead products so manufacturers have to go and make new stock with different alloys that are lead free. the MUR860G is lead free and The MUR860 had lead. That is the only difference.  Newark.com http://www.newark.com/jsp/search/browse.jsp?N=500003+1003903&Ntk=gensearch_001&Ntt=mur860&Ntx= has these available 03P9878 MULTICOMP
