I also posted this in the preamp section, hope that's okay...

basically it's a tiny preamp that can be built for less than $10 bucks ($15 if you go to Radioshack) that sounds nice but is extremely compact (my test PCB measured 1" x 1") that can be the backbone of MANY audio projects so check it out..... but read on if you want to know more!

On to the good stuff!
Well I have recently fallen in love with a little chip called the LM386 which costs only $.30...
yes 30 CENTS
so bought 20 of them to experiment with (not just audio stuff).

Chip Jr. (the name of the design, Chip Sr. is coming later) is a SMALL amp.
I did a test board that measure 1" x 1" yet sounds rather nice.
It has only 5 parts to it unless you decide to do some of my travel amp mods (on my site)

as always... check out the blog!

Nothing big, so don't plan on using it in any amp over about 10W....
but I use it a lot to level out my single coil and humbuckers...

i have a bunch of ideas for it up there also so check out the article or my entire blog  :tu: (link for blog is in my sig)

I will be building my Noisy Cricket amp here soon. The parts are scheduled to come in tomorrow (No one ships on Sundays  :-\)

Check out my blog here for the work log and audio clips when I finish it.
I am also building a Les Paul so you can check that out as well.

Also, if you want to support my next build, feel free to click the ads on the right hand of the page  ;D

Preamps and Effects / preamp for LM3886?
January 12, 2008, 05:10:04 PM
I'm using BrianGT's chipamp for my power amp stage...

What did you use?
What would you recommend?

I'm a fan of Marshall and Line 6 sound but that's not the definite sound I'm looking for.
If possible, I'd like a 3 band (bass, mid, treble) EQ but I can live without it.

I have been reading up on amp building a lot here lately (tube amp at first but they are terribly expensive).

Anyways, what is a good beginner amp to build? I have experience with pcb's and general electronics so I'm not a total newbie! I know I'm a beginner so I don't want to bite off more than I can chew, but I also want an amp I would be inclined to use, that sounds good, and is of somewhat high quality. I'd like about a 50 watter, but if you think that is a bad idea for a beginner I'll consider anything because after all, I'm new!!

I have seen the Little Gem (and MKII) and wasn't impressed with the sound clip I head of the MKII, the Little Gem was nice but I think I want something a little large. Same goes for the Noisy Cricket....

Basically, what amp would you suggest and what's a reasonable price estimate for the amp (without cabinet and speaker so just the head).

Thanks for any replies!
