Preamps and Effects / Re: DIY FUZZFACE CIRCUIT
June 12, 2011, 07:21:47 PM
I've printed out a large assortment of fuzz pedal schematics from fuzz central.com, but I've been too busy to try and find the parts, and they don't tell how to wire the switch into the circuit. I have schematics of a whole bunch of fuzz boxes, the big muff(which is another one I want to build), my wah pedal, and the very infamous clyde mccoy wah pedal. Maybe one day I'll get to build some of them(there are quite a few I'd like to experiment with). Thanks for all the advice. So, on the fuzzface, how do you wire the switch?

Juan is right. You don't want to have the amp burn your house down, or worse. A regular 2 amp fuse should do nicely. Just watch and listen very closely when you turn the power on. When I fixed my old amp, The first few times I used it, I mostly watched for any signs of smoke or odd smells. Sometimes you'll be able to tell if something's going wrong, and if you're lucky, you may get to kill the power before it kills your amp, or you. I came close to killing an amp once, the speaker wire had shorted out, and it got really hot, then it shut down. I'm not sure what saved it, but it still works. I got lucky, though, It's a peavey. I don't think Juan, or Joe will tell you the wrong thing. They seem to know what they're talking about. Their advice has helped me with a few things. I hope the amp works for you, and I hope what I've said helps you out.

Nice job, dude. :tu: I bet those come in handy, Especially when you're travelling. Those would surely be alot lighter. Are they difficult to build?

That makes sense. I'm thinking about getting a marshall class 5 combo. It doesn't have reverb, but it's supposed to be all-tube.
#155
That sounds like some kind of interference to me. My amp does that sometimes, In fact, most of the amps I've owned did odd things like that. I had 2 tube amps that would pick up radio signals. Try putting your amp in a different position, and see if the noise changes. I've found that it helps to move the amp sometimes. I'm pretty sure that's all it is, is interference.

I use a late eighties Marshall 4203 Artist Combo with a 1 x 12" Celestion and 2 x EL34 in the power stage. The sprign reverb unit is pretty good and produces a big washy sound. Due to the age of the unit it occasionally "disconnects" and stops working but probably just needs a cleanup. Theyre getting hard to find. I read recently in an interview with Joe Bonamassa that he bought one in Germany and uses it to record.

Yes, your reverb unit could use a cleanup.  I've played through a couple of SS marshalls, but I didn't like the way they sounded. I like the late '60's and early '70's tones. To me, most marshalls sound too modern. Of course, It would depend on the model. A tube type marshall would probably have that late '60's metallic sound I'm looking for. I'm into psychedelic rock, blues, brit-rock, very early metal, and southern rock. What type of marshall do you think would be best for that type of music?

Preamps and Effects / Re: best order for effects

Thanks alot, I've tried putting a wah before distortion, but I didn't like it. here's a list of how I run my pedals, starting with what I put closest to the guitar. Seymour Duncan Tweak Fuzz; Boss OC-2 octave; Johnson DEQ-2 distortion; Johnson SC-2 stereo chorus; Johnson EAD-2 analog Delay; and a Vox V847 wah-wah pedal. The amp I use has no effects loop, which I like. I still need to get a compressor, though. Is the dyna comp any good?

Preamps and Effects / best order for effects
June 04, 2011, 08:39:14 PM
Hello,

I just thought I'd ask what order most of you out there put your effects in. Do you put a wah before distortion, or after, like I do? I'd like to find some new sounds, and I thought this would be the best place for suggestions. As always, I appreciate any replies, and advice.

                                                                   Thanks, LJN

Try cleaning the pots. even if they're new, they could still have some corrosion. I always try the simple things first. Things seem to reveal themselves if you try the simple stuff first, and work up to the more complex things.
I hardly ever read manuals, myself.
Hope that helps.

The speaker still sounds great. I still use the old sears amp everyday. I just like to grab my guitar, have a smoke, and play for about 2 or 3 hours sometimes. I'm being alot more careful with the jensen. If that thing burns up, I'll never find another one like it. I mean, it's a '61!! I still can't believe it! Many thanks to you all for helping me determine the manufacture date, not only of the speaker, but the amp as well. :tu:

I'd be interested to hear what these cone/can shaped speakers sound like.

Good point, Joe. I would too. That amp is still very much ahead of it's time.

That's got to be the most bizarre looking amp I've ever seen. I don't know about that type of amp myself, but I'd sure like to see it in action.
#163
Hey, joe. If you want a bigger amp, then there's no reason not to get one, unless you have neigbors that don't appreciate good music. ;)

As you all know, I use my old sears amp on a daily basis. I'm not in a band or anything, But that's the advantage of having a bigger amp on hand. If you get the opportunity to jam with friends, you're fully prepared. My old amp, I'm pretty sure it's 100 watts. Which is perfect for just about anything... exept for pesky neighbors. Anyway, If you find one, get it if it's what you want. You don't have to crank it to make it sound good. if you have to use a low volume, get an overdrive pedal, and you're set! :tu:

Should be a way to fix it, you can rebuild speakers.  I've not done it myself, but I think Juan has.

I sure hope so, Like I said, If I can, I will get the other jensen and try to fix it. I can't really guarantee it, though. The combination of my jensen and celestion still sounds pretty good, though. I just don't like the fact that the celestion was built in 1980.

Don't push it too much with a powerful amplifier, you may easily burn it voice coil.
The original amp should be safe, though.
Anyway in those days amps were not meant to be pushed into overdrive but as clean amps.

Yeah, I know. At the time, it was the only good cab i had. I really didn't know exactly what it had inside, either. Now that I do, I'm gonna be more careful with it. I may be able to get the matching speaker to it, But my uncle said it rattles, and that was why he put the celestion in the top of the cab. I'm still gonna get the other jensen if I can. Maybe there's a way to fix it.
