Title: Who wants a power amp kit for free? **Out of LM3886 kits**
Post by: joecool85 on May 23, 2006, 10:45:46 AM
Brian shipped out a bunch of amp kits to me for me to distribute to you guys.  All I need is money for shipping.  I'm not totally sure what will be in the box, but he said that there is stuff for around 10 amps.  Anyway, there should be LM3886 and LM1875 kits.  Whoever wants one, post here and reserve one before someone else does!  I know RDV was interested in a LM3886 and a LM1875 last I knew...

I'd like an LM3886 kit. How much do you think shipping will be? Paypal ok?

Paypal will be excellent.  I can't imagine shipping would be more than like...$8 or something.

Could I get a LM3886 kit?  I don't have a paypal account set up, so is there any other way I could pay you for shipping?

I'm not sure how many of each kit he sold me, but if there are enough, you can have one as well.  A check would be fine, but I would wait till I get it in the bank before I ship the boards.

You know me, just email me the paypal bill once you know what it will be. I'm most interested in the LM1875, but I've got 2 toroids just ready to power something. The 20 + 20 200VA would work for the LM1875 one for sure. If that's not enough, I've got the 400VA one too.

I have a 25.2volt 2 amp (approx 50VA) CT transformer (12.6+12.6) that would be good for a LM1875.  With that voltage it would yield 15watts, plenty for a practice amp.  It's a new in package transformer I grabbed from radio shack.  I don't need it now but I got a good deal on it.  I'm willing to let it go for $10 plus s/h.

**edit**
It'd be a little bit of a stretch, but it would power a LM3886 to 40watts.

My 36vct 56VA only made 30 watts with an LM3886. It was loud though.

Really?  Hmm.  I got that figure from the datasheet not from actually testing.
Title: Re: Who wants a power amp kit for free?

If the theoretical maximum efficiency of a class B amplifier is approximately 71% then efficiency of class AB has to be bit less than this. Then there's losses in the power supply too. I'd say around 1/2 of VA rating is a good rule of thumb for maximum output power of SS class AB amp.
Title: Re: Who wants a power amp kit for free?
Post by: joecool85 on May 25, 2006, 08:06:24 PM
Ah, good point.  I was shearly going by voltage ratings.  Regardless, it should be perfect for a single LM1875 application.
Title: Re: Who wants a power amp kit for free?
Post by: RDV on May 25, 2006, 08:31:48 PM
R.G. did the math, I'm not that smart! That's probably a conservative figure because it was every bit as loud as it's been with more powerful transformers.

Title: Re: Who wants a power amp kit for free?
Post by: RDV on May 25, 2006, 11:02:03 PM
That transformer will work for an LM3886.

Gain Bandwidth    3 MHz
SupplyCurrent Per Channel    50 mA
Supply Min    18 Volt which is a [v+] + [v-] value
Supply Max    84 Volt
Output Current    11500 mA

Gotta have at least 9v per rail.

RDV

I had to fix this. I was wrong.
Title: Re: Who wants a power amp kit for free?
Post by: joecool85 on May 26, 2006, 07:26:29 AM
For one, it doesn't matter because its just plain old to small, for two, I think thats +/-18 not that it needs 18v per rail.  Regardless it is still perfect for a LM1875.
Title: Re: Who wants a power amp kit for free?
Post by: joecool85 on May 26, 2006, 08:59:58 AM
The transformer is now listed in the swapmeet section: http://www.ssguitar.com/index.php?topic=170.0

Any further conversation about it should be directed there or PM me questions.

Alright, I have one LM3886 kit ready to ship.  I should have enough for a few more LM3886 kits as well as a handful of LM1875 kits, but Brian forgot to send a few things to complete the kits so it will take a little while to work that out.

If I'm correct, Javacody, you asked for the LM3886 first.  So if you paypal me $5 to joseph.raymond@umit.maine.edu and give me your shipping address, I'll get it right out to you.

**Instructions for putting the kit together are available at chipamp.com**

I stand corrected.
The LM3886 will run on that transformer.
The 18v min is a [v+] + [v-] value which could even be 18vct.

In the mail.

It was only $1.50 or so to mail it, but due to the cost of the packing envelopes as well as the time to sort out the kits, I will still charge $5 flat rate shipping.

Yeah...still waiting on parts.  I have one LM3886 kit that all it needs are the AC connect terminals and another that just needs those as well as a 10uF 50v cap.  If someone wants one of the incomplete kits, I can ship them out.  Not sure how long it will take Brian to get me stuff since he is normally pretty busy.

I'm not sure what the LM1875 kits need exactly because I ran out of diodes for those.  I may have some lying around from a shipment Brian gave me a while ago though.  I also don't have any LM1875 ICs, he forgot to put them in the box lol.  If anyone is interested, I can try to throw together a couple LM1875 kits and see whats missing.
Title: Re: Who wants a power amp kit for free?

Are the AC connect terminals something that could be bought for cheap at a radio shack?

Title: Re: Who wants a power amp kit for free?
Post by: joecool85 on May 28, 2006, 05:31:15 PM
Not sure if radioshack would have them or not.  I would guess not.  As far as I know you could solder the transformer's secondary wires straight to it instead of using the connects.  I'd want someone to verify the safety of that first though.

I'll gladly pay for the extra stuff it'll take for one LM1875 kit. Whomever takes the other kit(s) should share their part as well. It's still quite a bargain. I've got everything I'll need including an enclosure(another dead CD player).

I'm ok with that though, I like answering questions.  Makes me feel smart.  There should be plenty of LM1875s to get you enough for a 5.1 since I think you are the only one that has even expressed interest in any of them.  Plus the LM1875s are unmarked boards, no C1,C2,R1,R2 etc to go by.  You just have to go by the schematic and a couple pics and stuff.  It's not a hard build, but not a beginner's one either.  The good news is, since I've done one I can answer any questions one might have about it.

Alright, 4 more LM3886 kits are ready to go.  Just send me $5 via paypal to joseph.raymond@umit.maine.edu

If you want more than one kit, ask first.  I want to make sure I have enough to go around.  Also, if you want to send a couple bucks extra (or even like 50cents) that would help to offset the cost of me ordering extra parts for the LM1875 kits.

**edit**
Kits will be shipped via USPS priority.

Post by: SECONDandBOWERY on June 09, 2006, 03:33:30 PM
Yeah it came in fine.  Don't worry - I have enough solder.

A few questions before I start putting this thing together:
1) Should I seperate the Power Supply PCB from the LM3886 PCB?  There is a scored line between the two and it doesn't look like any traces would be broke it I snapped it.

2) Do I need to heatsink the LM3886 while I'm soldering it?

Thanks again!

Title: Re: Who wants a power amp kit for free?
Post by: joecool85 on June 09, 2006, 03:49:43 PM
Yes you will want to break them apart.  You don't want the power super close to the amp section, you will get hum.  Plus the amp section can be hung off the heatsink via the LM3886 without problems, thats how I did mine.  As far as heatsinking the LM3886 while soldering, I wouldn't bother, it can take a ton of heat.  Unless you REALLY stink at soldering, it won't be a problem.  If you are worried, do a couple pins, let it cool, then do some more.

There aren't any more LM3886 kits, but I do have the 2 more boards and ICs.  So you would just have to get the resistors and capacitors.  If anyone is interested in that I will sell the power board, amp board and a LM3886 chip for $2.50, basically the shipping cost.

RDV, you mean just a board no chip right?  Cuz I'm all out of chips.

If anyone else is interested, I still have 4 more amp/power boards and 2 separate power boards without the amp section.  $2 for one board (doesn't matter wether its just power or power and amp), add $0.50 on for each board after that.

4 x amp+power boards (no chips, resistors or caps, just the boards)

Any of the boards are $2 a piece, if you want more than one it will be $0.50 more per board. (So 2 boards would be $2.50, 3 boards $3, 4 boards $3.50).  And if you want it shipped priority, add $3.

Are they better as a head and cabinet deal or just a simple all in one? Can they they cleanly drive a 4x12 or a 2x12?

Ive just looked at the chipamp website and the power supply has me confused.

Im not even going to attempt to build the power supply before I understand a few things, I figure this is the best place to ask them.

1. I need help on which transformer to use, Ive made stuff to plug into mains before but that was using an AC transformer which was storebought to power the circuit which was a 12v regulated power supply

2.Which fuses? Ceramic, M205, 3AG,

These are my main concerns at the moment that I would like to overcome before attempting the power supply.

*EDIT* OK after reading a bit more I think what I need is a transformer at least 160 VA with 2 secondary winding between 18 and 25 volts, The only thing close to that I can easily get a hold of is a toroid, Will this work? The one I am looking at is Jaycar Cat Number MT-2113 (18 Volts) or MT-2114 (25 Volts).

I think I understand a bit more now that I have read the LM3886 build guide and looked at pictures from chipamp, but I would still rather be sure.

It's always a good idea to do research BEFORE building a project like this, so good job on that.  As far as a transformer goes, I recommend one of these:

Avel 25+25 250va toroidal http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=122-625

For the fuse I just used a 1 1/4" glass tube fuse.  Not sure how many amps it was...I think 3 amp.

Rather than shopping over the internet I would go Jaycar. They have 25V 160VA or 18V 300VA.

Would the 160VA work, I ask because its around $20 cheaper

For a single LM3886 a 160va should be fine.  I got the larger one so I could add another channel if I wanted to.

I stand corrected.
The LM3886 will run on that transformer.
The 18v min is a [v+] + [v-] value which could even be 18vct.

RDV
So if that transformer will work,
How many watts are we talking here? How many volts would be ideal? How many volts to get full potential out of the chip?
Title: Re: Who wants a power amp kit for free? **Out of LM3886 kits**
Post by: RDV on June 18, 2006, 01:12:56 AM
To get full power you'll need either 36 to 50vct or a 18 to 25v dual secondary transformer with a VA rating of around 160. I little less or a lot more VA won't hurt. Just remember that any poweramp is only as good as it's power supply.

^^ I second that.

I do still have that transformer if anyone is interested.  But even though it would work ok for a LM3886 setup, it would be ideal for a LM1875.

Just got my kit, Thanks Joe and Thanks Brian.

Just wondering on these things

-Which do I build, Whats the difference between the standard confiuration and the feedback capacitor

-What rating and voltage should the on/off switch have and where does it goe i.e. before or after the transformer

-What kind of fuse, 2A 3AG or M205 or Ceramic Fuses.

Thanks

-Dream

One other thing, I want to use the flipster as the preamp and power it from a different transformer, What is the safest way to hook two transformers up to one ac power supply.

Also is this power supply regulated?
Title: Re: Who wants a power amp kit for free? **Out of LM3886 kits**
Post by: joecool85 on June 22, 2006, 07:47:15 AM
Let me try to answer most of these.

The I used the feedback cap on my LM3886 because if I remember right it is just a good idea and helps keep you away from SPiKe protection kicking in.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that.  Regardless I did it.

For the on/off switch you'll want a 110v or higher and 3 amp or higher

I think I used a 3amp 1.25" glass tube fuse but a 2amp would be plenty (2amps x 110v = 220w)

If you have more questions, its not a problem.  I asked the equivelent of a 400 page novel before I built mine lol.

I'm working on a guitar amp using The ROG Eighteen, Thundercheif, JCM800, and DR Boogey using sequential switching and wanted to mate them to an LM3886 based amplifier in a combo type install. I've already got the DR Boogey and the JCM800 built, tested, and tweaked the best I can and working on the Thunderchief this coming weekend.... oh well.... Everything is designed... One things for sure guys, if you don't like the amp for guitar, it'll make a great all purpose power amp. I'm using them as stereo amps and guitar amps, and I'm working on one that will probably be used as a PA amp for single or duo-style gigs along with my rescued Mackie 1202VLZ.

The church my son plays in the band at gave us a burned out Peavey 2.6C which I'm putting two LM4780 chips(each wired in parallel) for a 100 watt per channel stereo amp. The heatsinks are already there as well as the on/off switches and circuit breaker. It'll be a cakewalk! I thought about fixing the amp already in it, but the circuit board had been on fire in two places! This thing will be sweet!
