Title: Weird box spanner for potentiometers
Post by: mandu on July 09, 2025, 08:33:21 PM
Has anyone seen this box spanner?
Saw in a Japanese YouTube video
Many sizes in one tool.
Any idea where to get one?

Thank you in advance

Thanks for the info.
Checked a few sites.
Seems like a bicycle tool, made of zinc or aluminium alloy.
Does not feel strong.
Regards.

You could probably replicate that tool in a 3D software and get it printed in some of the many services out there in metal, and have a decent tool for ages.

or even turn/mill it out of a solid metal cillinder.

These are really useful for removing pots from guitar pedals, guitars and amps. I have a few lying around that I have bought a long time ago in a supermarket.
Yesterday i was looking for them online, but this tool seems to have many names.
'Dog bone wrench' or ' 10 in 1 wrench' seems to turn up useful results. They are dirt cheap via Alibaba. Prices online vary quite a bit.

For pots and jacks I use this kind of hollow tube spanner, to accomodate pot shaft.

8mm covers most 16mm pot nuts (the most popular today), 10mm covers most 25mm pots and classic "Fender" jacks, both classic all metal Switchcraft type and modern plastic ones.

Striated spanners are also very useful, combination types even better:

I also call it a 'bicycle wrench' and find it very handy for pots, as it allows for the shafts.  Like galaxiex showed, 'bicycle dumbell wrench' will get you better search results.
You are correct that it is not terribly strong, but that is great fine for pots and jacks anyway.  Pot bushings are easily broken from over-tightening, especially the small bushing types used by Peavey, or jacks with plastic.
When I use this tool I don't even use much leverage, just thumb and forefingers so I don't give it too much torque.

I use the Music Nomad Octopus wrench.  It's plastic, but for this stuff it works perfectly and doesn't scratch anything.
