Hey folks -
I have an original orange Cube60 that I'd like to modify. I've completely flipped over RunOffGroove's Supreaux Deux, so much so that I'd like to build it into this amp. What I have in mind is bypassing the original tone stack, and using those control panel spaces for the Supreaux's controls. I've found the schematic (http://www.ampix.org/albums/newamps/roland_cube60.pdf), and can pretty much see where the tone stack is, but I'm not sure about how to bypass it. I also wouldn't mind ditching the OD, since it sounds like crap as well.
Anyone interested in giving me a hand with this?
TIA,
Patrick
Funny that you want to do that, because of all the amps in the world, the Roland Cube 60 is already what you want to do.
Just look at the schematic: a FET version of a Fenderish preamp, with Fenderish controls, driving an SS power amp.
It even has 3 FET gain stages !!!
And the distortion you don't like, is the same type as what the Supreaux provides: overdriving a FET stage.
The Roland cheats, by adding D4 and D5 clipping diodes for a buzzier clipping.
Start by removing them.
Q1 on RC60 (short for Roland Cube 60) is the same as Q1 on S16 (short for Supreaux) , you should drive the 500KA volume pot from it, through those 4n7 caps, then go into Q2, after it pull the original tone control and volume, add the new simple tone control (4n7+500KA pot) and drive Q3, which provides the final clipping.
After it add the 12K+3n3 buzz filters, and go into a final 100KA master volume, which drives the power amp.
Unfortunately, I guess that the end result will be a dull amp, because the Supreaux is really a *Pedal*, meant to be plugged either into a Guitar amp (which is far from flat) or straight into a Mixer or PC Sound Board, which is wide range and is heard through wide range phones or Hi Fi speakers, with tons more high frequency response than any guitar speaker.
So, in a nutshell:
do not butcher your Roland Cube 60, build the Supreaux as a pedal (which it is) and use it between guitar and amp.
You'll have the best of both worlds.
Just my 2 cents.
I have to agree with Juan on this one. Of course, you could always build it as a pedal and mount it inside your Cube 60 then wire the input jack of the Cube so it has to pass through the Supreaux pedal. Use a relay inside the Supreaux for switching, then have a pedal outside of the Cube that turns the OD on and off. This way you don't mess with the electronics of your fancy amp, but you still have the Supreaux "built in". Just something to think about.
