Honey Amp / Honey Amp - The tone stack

The Honey Amp's tone stack is a modified BMP tone stack that was carefully adjusted to match the frequency sweep as closely as possible to the original Vox AC30 Top Boost circuit.  This gives a pronounced mid frequency dip throughout the sweep, while still being able to raise bass and lower treble, or lower bass and raise treble.  With the knob in the center position on the Honey Amp it is similar to a Vox with the Treble cranked and the Bass at roughly 7/10.  With the knob all the way counter clockwise, it is similar to the Vox at noon on both knobs (most folks don't turn down past this anyway from what I understand).  Lastly, with the tone on the Honey Amp turned fully clockwise, it resembles a Vox pretty much cranked on both knobs, and also with a treble booster in front.

This circuit is meant to be customized, changed, tweaked, and modified which is why I am sharing this information here.  If you find values that suit your taste better, please share, we're always interested in new changes!

As for me, I think I may "soften" the treble side of things for the next version of the circuit.

Bobby, 9v or 12v will work almost identically - the 12v giving just a tiny bit more clean volume.  It doesn't matter if it is 12v coming from a battery or from a wall adapter (as long as the adapter provides at least 250ma or so).

If you get a row of SIP sockets you can break them off individually and solder them in.

They might also work as a signal limiter so the signal after this stage stays below a certain level, the led's would start conducting at a certain voltage and thus limit the voltage going to C9 and C10.

I'm going with clipping diodes.  They were left out because the Pignose 30 is a bass amp and, generally speaking, people don't like distortion in their bass amps.  You could throw the diodes in (though I do recommend using sockets as suggested above) and see if you like it.

Acoustic Amplification has released a new sub-brand, Gamma.  Launching the new brand are the G25 and G50 guitar amplifiers.  They both have 2 channels, with the second channel featuring four selectable gain settings.  Both amplifiers use all new Gamma True Blue series speakers with the G25 sporting a 10" and the G50 a 12".  Other than speaker size and wattage (G25 is 25 watts and G50 is 50 watts), the amps are identical.  Both amps also include 1/8" stereo aux input, bluetooth input, and 1/4" footswitch at the rear (footswitch sold separately).

So, are these the analog amps we've all been looking for?  For me, it's close in many ways.  I love that they put so much engineering time into the speakers and overall quality of the amps.  I also love the simplicity.  Honestly though, I would prefer to get rid of the 4 voices and choose one (probably rock) to keep that part simple.  I would also recommend having an effects loop at the rear and/or including on-board reverb.

Still, with an MSRP of $139 and $199 USD for the G25 and G50 respectively, it is a whole lot of amp for the money.

I've been quiet here on the forum but reading posted stuff. Realised that I have too many questions and too little knowledge. So I would put my self in the shoes of that guy. Many of his ideas from different videos I was already preparing 'to ask..' but I figured out its better to try it my self first.
Failure is the best experience and education. 

So instead of asking '.. how to modify.." I decided to get few inexpensive amps and then to learn what I hear / why, why I like something and why I dont. Playing different guitars (thats now all the other story) through them I started to learn and understand about what I hear, and then how to change what I hear, to how I would like to hear it.
Then taking a wire out to a 12" external speaker/cab to compare what I hear .. a world of a difference and knowledge is opening. Still learning and experimenting.

Currently building a cab that will hold an exchangeable front with a 1x12" or 2x10" or 4x8". And also a cardboard test cab too.
Zoom G1/B1 xOn comes here as an inexpensive but useful tool for learning amp/cab simulations and adding some useful effects above it.

So to sum it up, for me it's: WHAT i hear, why I hear it and how to make a difference between 'good' and a 'bad' sound'.. (bad as not acceptable at the moment).


I'd love to hear your take on 1x12" vs 4x8".  I always thought a 4x8" would look cool and could sound really neat.  Honestly more expensive than a 1x12" though, and doing the math, it seems like it wouldn't be as loud (typically 12" speakers have MUCH better SPL than 8").
I've been curious recently, how important is it to trim low end freq vs high end?  My guess is that low end typically isn't the issue, but high end "hash" as you call it.  I'm also curious how this Nux unit does.  I have a Positive Grid Spark Mini that I've been enjoying.  Some of the models are pretty amazing, and others are...well, available.
NUX has released the MG-400 modelling amp and interface.  It can also function as a looper, drum machine, and custom display.  If you're interested in software amps, this may well be the least expensive way to get in over your head with options.

Anyone that knows me, knows that I am all about keeping things simple - sometimes to the point of obsession.  This doesn't mean that the end result is simple, just the interface.  Catalinbread nails this ethos with the new Elements pedals.  One knob, all tone.  It's dialed in to make killer sound, you just adjust the level and play.

We've all wondered where good guitar tone comes from.  Several forum members here, phatt, JMFahey - I'm looking at you, have said for years that it all comes down to EQ.  It turns out, this seems to be the case.  Jim Lill has started a series of "where does tone come from" videos and they are must watch videos.

Well worth the time if you want to know just how to make it work without spending a fortune.

Make sure you watch the last part about his Tackle Box,, it will seriously challenge the tube freaks.

I actually just found this series of videos a week ago.  I plan on posting about it soon!  Jim is a great story teller and shows us what we've known for a long time - it's all about frequencies - EQ, EQ, EQ.

It is very unlikely you will find a schematic for this now, if ever.  It's possible you will find a wiring schematic that breaks down how things hook up inside (PCB 1 goes to pins A, B, C etc).

For what reason do you need the schematic?  Most times amps like this either break with a simple thing (need to resolder a jack, or replace a potentiometer, maybe blown speaker) or are completely unfixable (DSP module dies).
