Amplifier Discussion / The Enclosures Thread
April 12, 2006, 04:14:44 AM
So we all know, the power inside of that box may mean a whole lot, but you dont get any respect for the build without a nice enclosure.

So why not a post for ideas about enclosures and such.

I have a few cabinets that I use for certain projects, so usually a rack unit has been more than enough to get my build going, but in many situations I find myself needing shelf units aswell.

Heres a list of sites that sell and make eclosures.

For the frugal and creative folk.
Some things that make great enclosures come from older electronics.
NES cases are awesome for the nostalgic.
Ive used old printers, speaker cabs, computer cases, VCRs and other set-top boxes, fish tanks, cigar boxes... to build quicky crap here and there :)
You can always buy acrylic from the local hardware shop.
Various types of wood.
Sheet metals... ect.
And everyones favorite pocket amp... the altoids tin! :)

Okay, so I have this 76 yamaha acoustic that is aged wonderfully, but beat up. I almost forgot about it until I found it in my attic. Well about 7 years ago I wanted to turn it into a project because its not really valuable, or an amazing guitar to begin with.

So I thought about adding a double top and double back to it. The double top would include a set of pickups. I like mcintrye accoustic pickups for on the fly(namely the CF-70), but i also like the popular LR Bags M1 too. I would use the CF70 as the neck position and the M1 below it.

What makes this a new fun project would be adding a 5w ss amp internally, to make this a very versitile guitar. Im like a few of you, and have a handful of axes.. so 1 project gone bad doesnt bother me, esspecially for this beat acoustic.

Now Ive done an internal amp before, but those were parkers(2), which are great travel guitars as is, and with a premade kit. To my surprize, they didnt lose any warmth.

So Im curious as to what suggested designs would require the least passive cooling and give me what I want to get from it. I would have a great deal of space to work with, and something like this could easily go pcb-less. The double backs clearance is negotiable, but I need to stick to atleast 3.5" in the chamber between the 2 planes.

Good read.  Dont get me wrong about this site. I sure hope people dont think SS vs Tube makes sence as a general debate. Both have their place, and both have advanced aswell. Becoming a fanboy of either will only limit you.

Eagle has been around for a while now, and runs on everything but native solaris and OS/2. Solaris 10 runs it in linux mode just fine, so I dont expect that to change LOL.

I was going to say for you to use eagle. But its such an obvious answer, I figgured you didnt want to learn eagle to convert it.

Preamps is where the money is at for solid state. It would do nothing but compliment any configuration.

Just tubed amps. SS is new to me. MB Mark2/3/4 stuff is what Im used too. I like 6L6 power I guess. But Im here to learn and change that. I definately like a few SS amp setups better than a lot of EL34 amps. EL34, while a great tube, is just not for me.

Ive seen a few Mac Amps that offered sponsors. Unfortunately the ones they list are all the tubed variants, or combos.

Im sure everyone uses a little of everything from time to time. But some performers, usually sponsored, are know to use certain combos of amp/guitars ect.
More in specifically, who can you name off the top of your head that is known for their SS equiptiment.
