Amplifier Discussion / SS circuit design questions
August 03, 2018, 01:27:34 AM
Hi, i haven't been on this forum in a bit but I've had some questions about SS audio (specifically guitar) circuit design:

I found this class AB circuit and built it with 3904/3906 and got a few watts quality out of it. Can i just pop in beefier transistors and raise the voltage to get more wattage? Do i need to worry about biasing?

If i want more wattage do i need a preamp circuit with more gain?

How would germanium transistors in the poweramp affect the sound? Even if its just a germanium PNP with a 2N3055?

Preamps and Effects / Voodu valve problem
June 28, 2017, 09:25:54 PM
A friend is letting me borrow his voodu valve online preamp and it has a squealing pitch whenever i turn the input up past half. I changed the tube and factory reset it and every preset sounds like garbage no matter what i do. Theres little information on the web about this thing having problems, any ideas?

Amplifier Discussion / Peavey basic 50 weird sound
February 05, 2017, 03:03:15 AM
My peavey basic 50 was working perfectly until i decided to turn the preamp out/power in jack into a speaker out to use with my speaker cab. I have the original jack plugged into the board (so the preamp is still connected to the power amp, i was lazy) and a new jack with the speaker output connected. The amp at first was really quiet now it just makes a wicked loud buzz. The original speaker impedance was 8 ohms and my speaker cab has a DC resistance of 9 ohms (i dont know the impedance im assuming its 8 ohms)

This is probably a dumb question but here it goes...

My friend gave me a crate 15w practice amp with a busted speaker, so i took the electronics out and ive been using it with a few cabs. First i connected it with a 12 inch 8 ohm  celestion and it worked ok. The amps output is 4 ohm so to get closer i took two practice amps i turned into speaker cabs and wired them up in parallel so i had 3x8 ohm speakers wired in parallel. This worked great for a while but recently theres been alot of loud crackle. Like when you plug in an instrument but way louder and harsher. Im running just one 8 ohm now and every time the guitar makes a noise that loud crackling happens. I tested it with my bc rich with humbuckers and thats when it makes the noise the most, my strat doesnt seem to trigger the noise at all. My 8 ohm celestion cab is for the tube amp im building anyways so i was just wondering what the problem is here.

Tubes and Hybrids / 6l6 power amp
July 20, 2016, 05:46:33 PM
Does anyone have a good power amp circuit using one or two 6L6 tubes? I need a power amp for a high gain preamp circuit using 2 12ax7s

Tubes and Hybrids / 6v6 power amp circuits
July 13, 2016, 04:24:58 PM
How many watts is a single 6v6 tube power amp typically, like in the fender champ. And is there a way i can use multiple to get 30-40 watts. Does anyone have a schematic for this?

Amplifier Discussion / How digital amps work
July 02, 2016, 06:41:46 PM
Ive played on alot of digital amps, particularly the line 6 spiders, fender mustang, and marshall (jcm? Some marshall modeling amp) and i was wondering how they work. Is there a processor in the preamp? How hard would it be to build a simple programmable amp like the mustang (it could run off arduino?). Im just a curious noob any help is appreciated

Tubes and Hybrids / Can anyone identify this tube
June 20, 2016, 07:17:43 PM
I ordered some tubes from the communist states of Russia the other day (no offense to my Russian friends!) They were supposed to be ecl8 tubes (for the low voltage tube amp on hackaday) but the ecl8 has 9 pins and these only have 7, im confused by this. They say "6X2П-EB" and are much shorter then most other tubes i have.

Amplifier Discussion / Dual channel amps
June 19, 2016, 10:26:47 PM
If you wanted two channels for two guitars to play on (like the peavey bandit 112 my guitar teacher uses) would you need two seperate preamps and power amps or can you just wire another input jack in parallel.

Tubes and Hybrids / 6v6 tube question.
June 19, 2016, 12:17:13 PM
If you took the power amp section of the fender champ amp (just the single 6v6 tube) and put guitar input directly to the 6v6 (eliminating the preamp) would it hurt the tube or just sound crappy? I was wondering if there was a way i could test just the power amp section first so i know it works when i test it with the preamp.

Tubes and Hybrids / Quick circuit question
June 16, 2016, 09:05:44 AM
Im building a tube preamp and i came across this symbol, was wondering if someone could tell me what it is. I see a 10k resister, is it just two 50uf caps drawn weird? Ive never seen it before and just wanted to make sure i know what it is before i build it

Amplifier Discussion / Distortion on this circuit
June 12, 2016, 12:46:36 PM
Im using the single transistor preamp with this 3 transistor amp circuit as a power amp. It works but its not good, im hearing radio signals, and alot of distortion. Whats wrong?

I built this amplifier circuit and i plan on using it for a (very) low power guitar power amplifier. It worked ok but there was some problems (bad quality at low volumes, buzzing, ect) wich was expected im pretty sure i can work those out.

My question is about the two diodes in series. I built it using one because that's all i had, how do those effect the circuit?

Tubes and Hybrids / Circuit for these tubes
May 26, 2016, 10:35:58 AM
Im looking for a circuit based on one of these tubes. Also if any of them are 12ax7 equivalent please tell me.

12B4A (i have two of these but only one of the rest on the list)
12CA5
12AL5
35C5
12BD6
12X4
12FX5
12BDK5
12BA7

Im looking for a preamp but if any of these can be used as a power tube i need one of those too. Im just a beginner and these are all i have access too at the momemt

Tubes and Hybrids / tube preamp for metal
May 22, 2016, 08:11:55 PM
can someone point me in the direction of a simple tube preamp with alot of gain and can get some overdrive out of it? preferably not too complicated as im new to tubes. yes i am going to start with a single 12ax7 preamp build but im doing research for an amp im designing (to eventually build) and i need a preamp for metal.

Tubes and Hybrids / Need a simple tube circuit
May 22, 2016, 02:46:51 PM
Im looking for a simple tube circuit for a guitar amp. I recently had a chance to play on a marshall 40 watt half stack and i instantlt fell in love. My favorite thing about it was the distortion i was getting when i turned the gain up, it was like variable distortion! I was wondering if i could find a circuit that had something like that where when the gain starts to go about halfway it starts to overdrive the tubes. I only need about 5 to 10 watts (special idea i have ill share in another thread) of power for this amp. Any ideas?

Im looking for a simple distortion setting circuit i can add to my JFET preamp. I tried shunting 2 rectifier diodes to ground on the output for diode clipping but it didnt change the sound at all. So far ive been using my ibanez turbo tube screamer and i really like that sound. Heres my preamp circuit im using

Is it worth using active tone controls or is it easier to just use passive tone controls from fender or marshall?

What are the pros/cons of each?

Amplifier Discussion / TDA2050 power amp problems
May 14, 2016, 08:11:38 PM
Hi! i'm new to the site and the world of building amplifier.
I successfully prototyped a J-FET pre-amplifier for my guitar amp I plan to use as my main rig.
for the power amp i'm trying to build a TDA2050 based circuit. i'm using the circuit from the datasheet and i'm using all the correct components, except when i power it i get no sound?

here's my theories for problems so far:
i have it set up on a breadboard just so i can get sound to see if the circuit works

i'm powering it with SLA batteries (temporarily) and the power supply I will build last, i'm only giving it 12v (I tried 24v with two in series to no avail) mostly because I know these are probably knock off chips from china and i'm afraid to run them at max voltage.

should I be using a different circuit? I only need a single channel and bare minimum for this project and i'm just trying to get sound from the amp at this point.

I've tried output from the pre-amp (also built a bit sketchy) and output music from my phone, both inputs are giving no output.

please let me know if i'm posting in the wrong place or you need more information. thanks!
