Hi Juan Manuel,
Many thanks for your words.

You are right, I've used courvin/tolex for the case + Batida de pedra (car protection) for the panels.

I'll try your pictures' tips (I almost forgot that you are also a photo's geek !). At the time I finished (today), there was no more natural light to take the pics outside, but I was anxious to publish the work for the forum fellows !

I've followed your tips for the case, mainly abt the fixation method of the roasting pan to the base, which worked fantastic for me !

My first idea about the front was to carve the name of the amp (Scarface) with the router but, for being frank, I don't image how to do it without some router additional accessories (which I don't have... yet!). I've seen there are some "pantographs" for router, which permits to do it so, however, it's impossible to get them here (and costs some money...)

In case I decide to build another (maybe a HiOctane model, from AX-84) I'd try to fit everything into an smaller roasting pan, since the case size seemed a little "too big" for my taste.

Anyway, I'm really happy with the result.
I'll be waiting your next visit to SP, Brazil, just let me know some days in advance, so I can buy some meat for the BBQ !

Tubes and Hybrids / MY FIRST TUBE AMP (AX-84, P1)...
October 12, 2009, 01:22:06 PM
Hi guys,
following Brymus' inquire, I'm posting the building process of this small (5Watts) tube-amp, following the indications from the "AX-84" community.

Just lacks the finishing, the backplate and to fix the "roasting-pan-chassis" to the case.
After finishing 100% I'll post the last pics + some audio demos in MP3.

As previously said, our SSGUITAR's participant JM FAHEY helped me to connect the PT and the OT on it !

Here goes some pics ! Hope you like.

Hi friends, so long !
I was very busy and, also, my office moved back to it's original place (around 80 kms away from my house), therefore, I'm spending abt 4 hours/day caught in traffic jams... a real nightmare !

I've to say, my "baking-Pan-AX84-P1" has been finished already, and I'm very happy with it.

Last sunday I had the honour (and pleasure) to receive JM Fahey at home for enjoying a very juicy barbecue and, after tasting a nice bottle of wine... he helped me to finish the "little beast", since I was very worried abt the PT's high voltage. As you may imagine, to connect the PT was a piece of Cake for JM Fahey...
I'm very grateful for his kind help and technical tips.

Next week-end I'll have time to take some pics of the building process, for posting them here.
In other hand, the only lacking part is to build a decent case for it.

Just post a single pic for you to see the face-plate.

Keep in touch.

Congratulations on my behalf too. I think there were very nice looking and sounding amps in the competition. I'd like to give Mensur's Hemarra amp, Minion's FET-TUBE-MOSFET-HYBRID amp, and Sergscar's Scarface amp a honourable mention too. Great job!

Hi Teemuk !
Thanks a lot for your comments on the "Scarface".

I do agree on 100% with the judgement of this contest, and hope more users do participate in the future ones.

It's always good to see others' beauties, since appreciating a good work can incentivate to "light-up" new ideas on all of us.

Cheers !

Well, I've posted this here before but what the heck... Here's my entry. The Hurricane was built for a friend as a gift for the harp player in his band.

Here are the particulars:

  • LM386 preamp similar to a ruby/noisy cricket
  • TDA2005 power amp
  • Big Muff tone control
  • Weber Signature Ceramic 6" speaker
  • Cabinet start out life as a flower box from IKEA that was heavily modified
  • Small leather handle hand made by a local leather repair shop for a whopping $12
Overall I'm pretty happy with the outcome. My first attempt at the amp had almost no distortion as I was running the preamp from the same 12V supply as the power amp. The distortion you hear in the clips is obtained by running the preamp at about 7V so it breaks up more. The "Category" control varies the gain of the preamp while the "storm surge" toggle enables an additional gain boost similar to the grit switch on the noisy cricket.

The clips were all made with the little 6" speaker in the cab. I tried it out on a 4x12 sealed cab and it sounded great! Didn't get a recording of it though and now it's off at its new home.

Really impressive !,
The case and the design resulted in a beautiful piece of art, and sounds really good !
Congratulations Armstrom !!!

Hi guys !,
I can see people here is taking things seriously... so seriously that I feel so miserable posting my work !  ;D

Anyway, and just in case the judges are blind or something like that, I'm sending the pictures (already posted somewhere in the forum) of the "SCARFACE RT2" Preamp (LM386) and the "SCARFACE RT1" MiniAmp (also LM386).

THE "SCARFACE RT2" PREAMP:
- MDF box, painted and shielded
- LM386, fixed gain at 20db
- For the decalcs, I've used a very amateur process: a) with a brush, I've applied a coat of regular white glue, on a transparent plastic sheet (those used for transparencies), the printed the information with an inkjet printer, after dried, used an XActo knife to cut the pieces and unsticked from the transparency very carefully, then applied to the top, painting everything with dual layer varnish

THE "SCARFACE RT1" MINIAMP:
- All construction from wooden scratch:
  * Cover in wood, protected with PU varnish (that "dual layer varnish" used in cars)
  * The case itself (100% handmade), was painted with a rubber paint (also used in the car industry), giving that particular "canvass" for, finally, using PU Varnish.
- LM386, variable gain.
- Powered by 9V DC battery or 12V DC adaptor (P4 Jack)
- 01 x 3'' Drive, 4 Ohm
- Ortophonic fabric was used as drive/speaker cover/protection
- Measurements: 13 (w) x 7 (d) x 10 (h) Cms.
- Weight: abt 400 Grs (battery not inc.)

A word to the judges: be nice !  :lmao:

Hi Phatt, so long !
I swear, never saw that project in my life.
The idea just came up during a free talk with my father in law, who was wondering why I was so worried  :grr to find some mats for building the amp... then he asked what I was exactly looking for, and firstly he mentioned abt something similar to a shoe's box... then he appeared with the roasting tray, asking if that may match, MOL, my search, and I shouted "Eureka!"
By living in South America, you can naturally develope a new "sense", for chasing mats from garbage...  :'(
The credits, in my case, goes to him (he's so grateful for having taken his daughter with me, that feels obligued to cooperate... ;D )

Anyway, your AVA 100 Project (pls send me the link) proves that I was not the only insane person around the world (I'll propose to create a community... "Insanes around the globe")

About measures, I have found a tray with the exact measures of the AX84 Project, and the lateral "flaps" would permit me to fix it onto a solid base, for sure.
The tray costed me abt USD 12,00. Pretty cheap !

I'm just deciding abt the transformers for adjusting the drilling plan. I've found a company, about 1000kms away from my town (Santos, Brazil) that can supply them by following Hammond's specifications in full, and will purchase them (both, the OT and PT, for a AX84 SEL, will cost me the equivalent to USD 120,00). Will document everything in pictures, posting them later on.

In other hand, I didn't forgot about your tone stack... just hadn't time enought to finishing it yet !
Thanks Phatt !

Hi J M,
Thanks your wise advice. I'll, then, use 01 x EL84. Frankly speaking, I used the "wrong" rule that says... the more expensive should be better... but seems to be this is not the case.

About the Chassis, please don't laught (well, you can, but not so louder, please...  :duh ) but i'm going to try a very unusual material for my first try. Here it goes my crazy idea:

Imagine a regular 12" x 16" x 2" (H) alluminium's roasting tray (those you use to cook delicious turkeys...),
turn it upside down..., and proceed marking and drilling as per your project.
The one I'm going to use have some small "flaps", which I can cut out and file without much effort.

I guess the alluminium thickness is strong enough for supporting the transformer's weight, so I though... why not to give this mat a chance ?

Do you think it may work ? I'll chase the right measurement tray and post a picture.
Obviously, after I start to do the job, will post a "how to" for our forum's friends !

Sergio

P.S.: My wife is a little worried by seeing me so interested in "her" kitchen's mats... She knows me very well !

Hi Syndromet,
Nice job !
I'm almost starting myself to build a P1 HO or even a P1 Single Ended Lead (SEL) from AX84.
What tube has you chosen for the HO ? 02 x 12AX7 + 01 x EL34 ?

My idea is to use KT88, but I'm not pretty sure at this stage. Still canvassing the parts, since its very difficult to find some of them here (chassis is a real nightmare to be gotten...).

I'll place some pics after i build it.

Last comment: very clean set up. Congratulations my friend !

Hi Polo,
Welcome to the board (I've already sent you a PM in spanish)

JoeCool is right abt the LM386's preamp. i've done one myself and plugged it into my 12W Dean amp, the sudden change was impressive.

Hope you continue posting your ideas and pictures, so everybody can see and discuss details.

Keep in touch

Sergio

Hi guys,
I've finished the casing for the preamp.

Here I post some pictures of it:

Another good thing is that I can use the pre-amp as "stand-alone" headphone amp which, by the way, sound very nice !
Just lack replacing the jacks, since I've used stereo ones, and sound is just audible in one of the channels...

Hope ou like.

Hi guys, as promised, here you have the demos:

DEAN GTX12, without preamp => http://www.scarimbolo.com.ar/31MAY091_DEAN.mp3
Preamp => DEAN GTX12 => http://www.scarimbolo.com.ar/31MAY091_DEAN_PRE.mp3

You will notice the difference I've talked about... but, please, forgive my poor performance in the guitar

Doubts/questions, feel free to let me know.
