Amplifier Discussion / New Amp day![pic]

It's a Crate Flexwave 120/212!

Sounds great and it's LOUD great for practicing with my band. =] Looks better in person, btw.

Anyone care to explain speaker magnets? The ones in this baby are thin, and I remember someone who once told me thin magnets were bad. I plan to put V30's in this thing soon. :D

Amplifier Discussion / Short before Diode?
June 07, 2008, 02:23:57 PM
I sold a guy an amp I used to have. A Solid State Crate GLX1200H[using the earlier Flexwave preamp] and there's a problem where you have to crank the volume of the amp to get it to pump the volume out or you're stuck with a fizzy volume level. So it happened once to me and to him just now when he got home [he called me] and he said something about a short before a diode, and the diode isn't getting enough energy. Can you help diagnose it any further before he takes it to a shop? Really don't want to have to take the amp back.

Vox AD-VT series really attracts me. I'm selling a SS stack to get a AD50VT 1x12 combo. all it uses is a 12ax7 in the power amp[oddly enough] and I cranked this baby at the shop. Sounded superb, even when compared to all tube amps, it still holds it's place above your average SS amp.

Make it a small combo. 50 Watts is actually all you'll need. Matter of fact, see if you can get your hands on the Vox Valvetronix hybrid schem. They sound like a fully tube amp and only use one 12ax7. I'm big on hybrids because of versatility and sound quality.

I plan to buy a Vox AD50VT 1x12 combo mostly because of the power/size/weight comparison to my fully SS 120 watt stack.

My first name is David = d4v1d and well it works just fine now. I guess it was a temporary problem. I can play the amp at all volumes. But no, what happened was i had to turn the preamp to 9 for the power amp to kick in. i thought i blew it, but it wasn't blown. maybe it is? but if it's blown, it shouldn't work, right? Eh, i guess i just won't play it for 2 weeks[selling it to a guy] and make sure it works before sold at at least volume of 5[for gigging purposes]. But, let's hope nothing happened.

i plugged my pc directly into my poweramp via the effects return and now i have to crank my volume to about 9 before it 'hears' the preamp. did i mess something major up? or just the fuse?

Just to add to what he said, that's how Overdrive works. Well, in tube amps that is. If you have your preamp and master at say 5, and it's clean, and you pump that preamp to 10, it will 9.99/10 times clip. Thus you get anything from a light blues breakup to a heavy metal sound, depending on how many gain stages the preamp has.

Easiest way to explain tubes too it that they 'recreate the sound'. Like they take the sound and amplify it with rich harmonics that most SS amps can't get.

In response to the guy who likes the MG series, The term Warm is referred to the tubes effect. The hotter/warmer they are the better they sound. SS amps can get warm, but more than likely not. They've got a 'cold' sound. It's just like the weather. Tubes have a looser more 'organic' sound like a natural plant would grow/adapt to it's environment, whereas SS amps have a direct sound and are tighter in response and sound closed up in a box and less free. You can get a good SS sound if you try hard, but if you like the tones of classic and modern rock, you're better off with Tubes. But all in all, the FDD switch the MG series has really does warm things up for the circuitry it has.

Another thing I noticed is SS amps have more 'room' to build in effects n such. Like the Line 6 Vetta sounds amazing and it's solid state, but mostly because it has the ability to program so much. It's got a computer inside of it, basically. So that's the advantage.

Tubes and Hybrids / Re: Fetzer-Valve/Tube Preamp

I agree with joecool. Cool thing is I basically have your setup you want, except 6v6 power tubes instead of a SS power amp. The Fender Super Champ XD has some solid state emulation before the preamp tube and then when you drive the preamp it sounds good. I would always go with a tube power amp though, because then you can crank it with out it mudding up easily and it will sound better loud. capish?

I have a Roland Jazz Chorus 120. It's a 100 watt SS guitar amp. Really nice[but ugly xP]. I recently had an idea and it worked. I hooked up my pc directly to it. Due to my sound drivers I can get awesome bass out of it[so much my house shakes]. I was wondering if this was safe at some decently loud volumes.

I know it's not meant for really low frequencies, but I was wondering if I could do it anyways, and not have to worry about it blowing up.

Can you put that in Noob terms please? :D

Amplifier Discussion / Re: What kind of speakers?

I would save $130[or more] depending on how many speakers your wanting. I would go with Celestion Vintage 30 Greenback's. I want a pair for my amp badly. They'll get even a 1 watt amp to 100db...

Hey guys, I want to create an effects loop in my amp so I can buy the EHX tube eq pedal and make it a hybrid. How would one go about doing this?

The pop is [i assume] power running through the amp and it's like "HEY!" Even on max volume in the high gain input, it's a very low pop and the speakers jump a tad. I thought it was just the power getting to the power amp in a ball of energy but I'll make sure to check that out. I'm probably going to save money and just have all the caps and resistors and whatnot replaced with new upgraded stuff that will even improve the clean tone[it'll be super super clean!].

I don't know, mines pretty old though. The light doesn't even come on when I turn the amp on. My signal is a popping sound.  :P

My serial number is 529195 if that helps any. Help me find the right schematic please. And as far as anything goes, I understand for the most part on how to find the right thing and change it. I just would like to grab the caps and resistors the crate[gfx?] series uses. Not for the solo part, but at least so I can get a nice crunch.
