Preamps and Effects / Re: Dazed & Confused.....

Hey Neosho thanks for the speedy reply, I will take up your advice! I've never really though about it much, but I guess you're right, a lot of guitar players DO use tube amps!....I guess it all stems from the one bad experience I had way back when, I was with my Mom who traveled to Brantoford ON Canada with her church...i was the guitar player from the NY branch, and they didn't even have a guitar player up there! I didn't have an amp to play through so somebody went over to the Minister;s house, turns out he had one in his living room, it was a tube amp, and when they brought it I was elated! But after playing through it for two days I quickly became annoyed with it, it was too "mushy" when playing rhythm, it had an even worse lead sound....like a bunch of metallic bumblebees buzzing around a giant coffee can...so that one experience did it for me...but I tried throughout the years to fall back in love with tubes, it's just that after playing through some great sounding SS amps I can't go down that road anymore....as for how I use it....think: B.B.King....meets Metallica....meets Jimi Hendrix.....and that's kinda what I sound like...(at least to ME anyways!...LoL!) But I'm so jaded that I'm even willing to give tubes ONE more shot...I was checking out this amp called the VT55H made by Bugera....it looks like what I need....no menus...presets....sh*tload of effects etc....just a  two channel amp with simple controls, and reverb.....AND it's got a nice price tag too.....so I might just give it a shot. My setup is pretty sparse but it works for me....it's:

Fender Squier Strat / Xaviere Guitars Tele into a (for now!) Crate VT212B 2x12 SS combo. I run the Barber TriFecta Fuzz... Boss MT2 Metal Pedal Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Wah and GuitarFetish Chorus Pedal all through the effects loop. When I do play live I use the Line out on the amp straight to the FOH......simple but effective......

Preamps and Effects / Dazed & Confused.....

OK...so I'm a guitar player (Duh!) and I'm looking for a great SS amp...(can't afford to maintain tubes, besides they're too fragile for my tastes!) But I'm not sure which amp I should get, I've seen the "modeling" amps but they don't do it for me, There are also a ton of ss amps out there, but my problem is that most of them are coming with all sorts of pre-loaded effects. I "want" and amp that is simple and straightforward, with no effects of any kind, (I have a pedal board and a half of those, don't need any extras!) and would like it to have either one or two channels, and as few knobs as possible, no menus, IS there an amp out there like that or would I have to build it? And if I DO have to build it...are there any web-sites someone can point me to? It's weird because I like the sound of Fuzzfaces, and Overdrives, just not through a tube amp....and I also need it to be head/cab formatted because I will be taking it with me when my weekend warrior band hits the clubs around town....can anyone help?

Thanx!

Thanx! Jack1962!...I tried  the same "taste test' using the 4 x 12 that came with the Carvin and the 2 x 12 from before, and the Carvin does sound different, when I run the Peavey through the same 4 x 12 cab, it gets a different sound than before, more edgy and in your face, AND it also sounds more "tube-y" too! What gives? I mean I know speakers have a lot to do with your initial sound, but can they alter the SAME signal coming from the SAME guitar, through the SAME effects pedals, by the SAME fingers?....incredible!

I've never tried them myself, but I've heard good things about the Eminence "Patriot" & "RedCoat" series....maybe you could check one of them out to see which one gives you the sound you're after? My cousin just got himself a VOX head, and he runs it through a 4 x 12 cab loaded with his personal favorite of RedCoat speaker...check 'em out!!

Enzo....thank you SO much dude!. I checked out the schematices from both amps and there are quite a FEW differences between them! i guess I'll be toting the BOTH of them to and from my gigs, as I like the "tube-y"ness of the Carvin, but the Peavey Supreme XL has a "thicker" bottom end. Maybe a dual amp setup with switching between the 2? Anyway thank you for your response...ok gotta go and shatter some windows!

Cheers!

Amplifier Discussion / Stoopid Question.....

So I've just gotten a hold of a Peavey Supreme XL head. I also have a Carvin SX300-H head, both amps are S.S. I've placed them side by side and done a comparison, and to my ears the Carvin sounds more "tube-y" than the Peavey does. Why is that?...is there some magic involved?..or does it really just boil down to the resistors, capacitors, transformers used? I've played through them both out of a 2x12 Avatar speaker cabinet, along with & without a fuzz pedal on my Fender Standard Strat...sorry for the stoopid questions but i have to know! Also if it IS just a matter of different components is there any way to make the Peavey sound like the Carvin? maybe by switching out parts?....any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanx!

Being new to this forum I'd like to add to both Jack's & Nashville's comments, I have used both tube and solid state amps throughout my 20 years of guitar playing, both professionally and as an enthusiastic hobbyist. IMHO I would have to say that Peavey has a strong Non-valve presence in the market today. They may not have been the first one, but they mastered the "TransTube" sound thing, they offered it in combos that ranged from an 8" speaker all the way up to 2x12 combos, I know they used to make a head called the Supreme that was not as great as it could have been, but there's always the XXL head which is also a TransTube model but this one has "kick" I've used mine extensively and it has yet to NOT deliver what I need tone-wise. If you can find one on the cheap then you should be ok, if not you might want to check out the Peavey web-site and see if you can order it direct, and the best part?...it's nowhere near as expensive as an all tube head would be!...cheers!!!

Thanx to all of you for your responses....I've done my homework, and it seems I'm going to do the "Carvin" thing....it's going to be awesome here's how it's gonna be:

1 Fender Standard Strat>>aNALOG Man Peppermint Fuzz>>Jim Dunlop Wah>>MojoHand Nebula Phaser>>Carvin SX300H Head>>TruTone 2x12 Cabinet Side By Side With Avatar 2x12 Cabinet....I have almost all the pieces to my "tone" puzzle! Thanks again for all the info.!! I also may be looking into building my own pedals.....(Tired os seeinf someone ELSE's name under my feet!..LoL!) So I'll probably be on here a lot asking all KINDS of stoopid questions!!!

The Newcomer's Forum / A Little Help......
July 23, 2008, 12:58:23 AM
Ok.....so I'm new to the amp game, and my problem is...after hearing my father & his best friend talk about tube amps for years, I've decided that I'm only going to use SS amps with my rig, I won't go into details but I find the sound of tube amps a bit "mushy" for my tastes....I feel that SS amps have more definition in them...that being said can anyone recommend a good sounding SS amp that doesn't cost an arm & a leg? One with 2 channels, (3 is good but I only really ever use just 2!) And one that (preferrably!) "Made In America"? A couple of friendsa of mine have given me info on a company called Carvin, and another one called Kustom but I've been checking the web and it appears there's a whold bunch of companies that do SS amps for the masses. (B-52, Crate, Carvin, Randall, Tech21, Behrigner..etc.) Just wondering...if anyone can steer me in the right direction it would be greatly much appreciated!

Thanx!
