Tubes and Hybrids / Reduce signal from preamp.
January 19, 2021, 06:47:34 PM
I have built amp with a starved plate 12au7 preamp feeding a solid-state power amp module. There's a 100k audio pot controlling the signal going to the power amp. Whats the best way to pad the input to the power amp? A resistor in series somewhere?

I think I have one of those toilet valve thingies.

I really need to get a better iron/station. Any recommendations around €100/$120 or so?
The cheapo is useful but it seems shame to bin it after a day. You get what you pay for, right? I think I've found a source for suitable tips now but I'll also try the workarounds mentioned below.

Could you add Ireland for shipping please. I'd vote for no speaker.

actually a 4mm drill bit fits with loosely so it might take up to 4.5mm

I got a cheap 30W soldering iron as a stopgap.

Unfortunately, the tip lasted approx 30 minutes of use. The tip is 75mm long, approx 3.5mm diameter and held in place by two grub screws. Does anyone know of a better quality tip that would fit?

I too have been making small fun amps from tins. A cookie tin is a far cry from a wooden guitar cab and give interesting results! The latest one actually has its own natural reverb effect which I imagine is due to the resonance of the thin sheet metal. Sounds nice with harmonica.

its a bit like '0-60 mph in 4 seconds'. But either way, even let's say 100W from a little brick would make this very useful. A few pedals in front and Robert is the sibling of your parent,

Should I have tuned the guitar? Of course

Well I built a Valvecaster running on 12 v with a 12AU7.  Did I enjoy building it? Yes. Do I like how it looks and sounds? Yes. Did I make the tube  unnecessarily visible to look cool? Yes. Was it worth the trouble? Yes for me. Will I build more? Probably

BTW the volume pot is 1M ohm which is not ideal as its 'off' from 1 to 9 and everything happens from 9.1 to 10. Can I improve that by adding resistors in parallel?

The caps were not charged in at least 3 years so I should be OK. I've used the Kemo amps a lot and I like them. They need good shielding and grounding for noise. I also have the 40w version and you can hammer it with fx pedals without the amp distorting. This 12w one will distort a bit more with a guitar. They are durable though, compared to some cheaper PCB modules which dissolve once a soldering iron is introduced.

It's been a while but this is going to be a powered speaker and maybe guitar amp. It has some of the lovely old radio sound due to the speaker and the enclosure even if theres no valves in the signal path. On the right is a whopper of a volume/tone/power switch. Pot seems noisy but I will definitely use the on/off element. The front panel lights up with good old fashioned incandescent bulbs. I plan to leave the chassis intact and in situ.  Should I discharge the old capacitors for safety?
