Preamps and Effects / DIY FUZZFACE CIRCUIT
April 24, 2011, 09:26:56 PM
Hello, Does anyone know if the fuzzface schematic on freestompboxes.com actually works? I've been thinking of building a fuzz box that's more "vintage" flavored, but I've never built a stompbox before, and I'm not very good at reading schematics.  Will any transistor work? Or do I have to use the very same one it calls for? I was also thinking about ordering one of those DIY mosrite fuzzrite kits.I have a seymour duncan tweak fuzz pedal that I use every day, but it does sound a little dark and muffled. Any advice on building a fuzz box? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

That is correct. And as long as you don't overload the speaker itself, you should have no trouble at all.

I'll be sure to do that from now on. Does it hurt those amps to run stompboxes with the overdrive on as well? I don't imagine it would, but I'd just like a second opinion. Thanks.

I figured as much. Maybe I'll just get a reverb pedal and put in front of it. Thank you for the advice.

don't mention it maybe you'll help me later on. I wish you good luck with the speaker, and hope the problem with the amp itself is a simple thing.

It should be fairly easy to pull the chassis. sounds like a serious problem that you're having with the amp, but you never know, it could be as simplr as a dirty pot. try working the volume knob back and forth. if you hear a scratchy noise, the pot is dirty. I've had some amps that would suddenly lose volume because of a dirty pot. All I'm saying is check the simple things first before assuming that you need to have it repaired.

You could clip the wires and put the on a standard female plug, or if the speaker has those little slide-on connectors, get some more and disconnect the speaker from the amp. After you do that, fasten some wire into the new connectors, and wire them to a female 1/4 inch jack. another way would be to connect a cord straight to the speaker and put a 1/4 inch male plug on the end of that. that can be done by soldering, or if you've never soldered before, get solderless connectors and a solderless plug. you can just leave the amp's speaker wires hanging inside and when you decide to fix the amp, simply reconnect the speaker. it's a very easy thing to do. Hope this helps you out.

I'd like to add that the reverb is supposedly some kind of wierd piezo type unit. it works, but it's very weak. Is there any way to modify the old beast to accept a more convetional(better) reverb tank? If so, how difficult might that be?

I would like to add that if the over drive is on and you turn a fuzz pedal on with that, it gets a pretty cool effect, but has alot of feedback. I'm sure that's normal, but I just thought I'd mention it.

thanks guys, yes I was just trying to post this new topic. It wouldn't let me do it without a question, and that was the only thing I could think of. I'm still new at this whole forum thing, hope I didn't cause any problems with that question.

the spped knob is either for trenolo or vibrato. the other knob should say intensity or strength. That's a very hard to find amplifier. so it will be very hard to locate knobs that look anything like the original ones. the footswitch is for the reverb and tremolo, to turn them off and on. that way you can use them as if they were effect pedals. my advice to you about the knobs is to find some you like and put them on it. hang on to that amp, you'll probably never find another one like it. I know how frustrating it is to try to find out about an old amp that keeps bringing you to a dead end with your research. I've had the same problem trying to find out about my amp. But, I've realised, if it works, and you like the way it sounds, that's plenty good enough. you can find out all you need to know about it just by simply plugging your guitar in and playing some of your favorite tunes, also by turning all those knobs one way or the other. They're right about smallbear. I ordred some parts for my amp from them not too long ago. they're a little slow on shipping, but they're a great company to order from. I hope this helps you, and that the amp brings you many years of enjoyment.

I've used rubbing alcohol. sometimes it works. it's cheap, and it usually dries fast. hope that helps.

I'm pretty sure that the bigger the capacitor, the less distortion. don't know too much about the rest. but, the capacitors are easy, you can always go bigger until you get rid of the distortion, but I think that if you go too big, you could run into some problems.

Hello everyone, not to long ago I purchased a starcaster 15G practice amp from a local pawn shop for $25. When I got home and plugged it in, It sounded pretty good(a little mellow for my taste, though), but the bass control didn't work like it should. there is no bass at zero, which is normal. But as soon as the knob is turned to one, it's like you've flipped a switch and it's on 10. it doesn't change as you progress from 1 to 10 with the bass knob. anyone know what may be the cause?

I'd like to add that my uncle told me that he thought the output on the anp was 50 watts. I just remembered that. I'd say that sounds about right. It seems louder now that I've put the three prong cord on it. It's not a small amp. It's heavy and about 3 feet tall, give or take 4 or 5 inches. I sure wish I could find out more about this old beast though. Any one out there know a way I could makr the reverb stronger?
