A couple of other alternatives... I've never tried these and may have, in fact, found the links in the schematics part of this site. Anywho, for what it's worth:

And this is more of a complete project... I think RDV sent me this one:

I haven't tried either, so I can't say how easy they are to get up and running... they seem simple. Chipamp.com is probably the easiest, though.

Yes, speaker efficiency... I've read (don't remember where) that it's best to get speakers rated in the high 90's/low 100's, but I guess I never thought about exactly what that meant... I wonder if efficiency has any effect on frequency response/tone? Thanks RG.

I have a hundred watt SS ampeg with a 15" speaker. It does ok with a band (as long as you're not competing with two half stacks)... but I always want more power for the low end. I agree with RDV, buy something cheap and used unless you really want to build.

Not that we'd have any use for those transistors attached to the heatsink, but they appear to be quite expensive new:

I suppose if it's that easy I could find the time! And if it's only shipping, then I could spend extra cash on a nice tranny and/or enclosure. Well, let me know when you get the stuff and if you have any extra!! I'm sure I couldn't resist the project if it's in front of me!

I guess I can ask here, what else did you need to get to complete it? Tranny, shielded wire... I have all the other stuff that goes with stompbox building (jacks, soldering accouterments, etc.).

I'd be interested in a lm4780, but I'm afraid it'd take me too long to put together (and disappoint brian!)... I always think I'm going to have time to dedicate to these things, but I've had the parts for a phase 45 for about three months now without any progress!

Thanks for the offer, though!

That looks easy... but no mid eq? hummm...

Cool. Thanks for the explanation teemuk. I'm excited to see if you simulations using a output transformer(?)... seems this was a topic not to long ago over at the stompboxes page... It seems to be down at the moment, but I'll post a link to the thread as soon as I can find it.

Seems like you could simulate the high end squishing and, to some degree, the power amp sag of a tube amp with a compressor... or a couple of compressors (one before and one after the preamp?).

Buzzo from the Melvins used a Sunn beta lead... nice amp, by the way. You can blend the two channels so you can have a clean signal mixed with the overdriven one... kind of like a tube screamer.

BB King and Ty Tabor(?) from King's X used a LabSeries L5 (although I've heard that Ty just ran the preamp through a tube power amp).

Wow. Cool idea Teemuk. I've been wondering about the relative performance of various power amp designs... So, the basic difference between the 'simple' and 'modern' circuits is four transistors? Can you explain simply what they do in the circuit?

Wow. Thanks teemuk.

Here's a question that might be impossible to answer... It'll definately show how little I know.

What determines the output impedance of a circuit?

I know RDV used an old vox preamp design for one of his chipamp projects... did he just get lucky in matching impedance and getting appropriate gains? Or are these things fairly standardized? I guess I'm asking RDV that...

Oh, I see. So, in theory, you could just stick a tone stack and a clean boost in a 9volt stompbox instead of doing a proper preamp... or use something from ROG... if it would work, that'd be cool. You could easily have a bunch of very different amps at your fingertips.  sort of like an analog amp modeler, I suppose.

But, this is what teemuk said would be noisey, right?

I'm sorry, I wish I understood this stuff better...

What's the advantage of increasing the gain of the power amp? Would this somehow make it easier to design a preamp?

hummm... I'd be interested in a pcb of this preamp if it all works out in the end... I think i'm interested in the same performance as you guys... something that will breakup a little if pushed, but is basically clean. outboard distorto.

joecool, what's the group buy all about? just pcb or kit? any discount or just free preamp pcb prototype?
