Get into very serious trouble for that here where they are a protected native critter, but in New Zealand where they are an introduced major pest it's a whole other story.  Don't know what they eat like, but the Koories made very excellent blankets out of Possom skins - in fact their unit of cold temperature was the Possom, e.g. "it was a ten possom (skin blanket) night" (see also Three Dog Night).
