Title: Road 220 malfunctions
Post by: A7 on May 18, 2022, 07:35:37 PM
Pulled out my old Road 220 plugged in and nothing. If you move the line out to the speaker you hear a buzz then nothing. Any ideas?

Any lights come on?
You really need to add a bit more info.

Please connect speaker to speaker output,, line out is not for speaker.
Phil.

I'm sorry when I said line out, I meant the line to the speaker. The power light comes on and there is a boink sound. That's it. Everything is clean inside and all solder joints look good. I really have know idea what to look for.

Basically you divide it up.
If you have a line out then connect that to another amplifier as that will establish if the preamp is working.
If the preamp is working then you know it's likely the power stage has issues.

If the unit has sat for a long time then insert plugs many times into input sockets as they maybe corroded. you can use WD40 or similar to get them working.
If there is no luck then you will need a DMM to test for voltages inside.

Will give it a shot, there are no amp techs within 100 miles so I'm on my own.

So what did you mean by 'moved' in the first post?  If you mean just wiggling the wire going to the speaker makes a buzz come and go, then that sounds like a bad connection.

Yes no sound, but if you move the cable you hear the buzz and then nothing. Is it possible the amp output jack is bad or just oxidized?

Yes could be the socket but more likely the plug is faulty.
If the speaker cable has a metal shroud then unscrew it and check the connections.
If you have another cable around try that.

I'm using the same speaker and speaker cable that I use with my Kustom amp so I know it's good. I've got some good pictures will try to figure out how to post them you'll see this amp is very clean inside.
