Is the current increase due to just a higher voltage on the load resistance?

Amplifier Discussion / SS circuit design questions
August 03, 2018, 01:27:34 AM
Hi, i haven't been on this forum in a bit but I've had some questions about SS audio (specifically guitar) circuit design:

I found this class AB circuit and built it with 3904/3906 and got a few watts quality out of it. Can i just pop in beefier transistors and raise the voltage to get more wattage? Do i need to worry about biasing?

If i want more wattage do i need a preamp circuit with more gain?

How would germanium transistors in the poweramp affect the sound? Even if its just a germanium PNP with a 2N3055?

Preamps and Effects / Re: Voodu valve problem
June 30, 2017, 05:00:13 AM
Thats what i assumed, but the problem is still there when the preamp is set to clean, and the amp is set to clean at low volume. Moving the guitar does not help, the amp without the voodu valve sounds fine when i just have my rangemaster treble booster hooked up. I do not have the treble boost going into the voodu valve.

Its only when the guitar is plugged in and the volume is all the way up. It sounds like there is way too much gain except even on the clean channel after every note i play there is a little squeal that sounds almost like a microphonic tube, but i just put in a brand new one

Preamps and Effects / Voodu valve problem
June 28, 2017, 09:25:54 PM
A friend is letting me borrow his voodu valve online preamp and it has a squealing pitch whenever i turn the input up past half. I changed the tube and factory reset it and every preset sounds like garbage no matter what i do. Theres little information on the web about this thing having problems, any ideas?

Amplifier Discussion / Peavey basic 50 weird sound
February 05, 2017, 03:03:15 AM
My peavey basic 50 was working perfectly until i decided to turn the preamp out/power in jack into a speaker out to use with my speaker cab. I have the original jack plugged into the board (so the preamp is still connected to the power amp, i was lazy) and a new jack with the speaker output connected. The amp at first was really quiet now it just makes a wicked loud buzz. The original speaker impedance was 8 ohms and my speaker cab has a DC resistance of 9 ohms (i dont know the impedance im assuming its 8 ohms)

Amplifier Discussion / Re: Distortion pedal to a SS amp

Ive used my ibanez turbo tube screamer as a preamp to use with a 386 power amp before.

i would love to use the mis-engineering compensation tool (fist) but there is no chassis on top and its already bit me a few times for poking too close to the power transformer (10/10 ESA recommends). it does this with all speakers. i may have damaged the chip, thanks for the input.

Update: happens with both guitars

This is probably a dumb question but here it goes...

My friend gave me a crate 15w practice amp with a busted speaker, so i took the electronics out and ive been using it with a few cabs. First i connected it with a 12 inch 8 ohm  celestion and it worked ok. The amps output is 4 ohm so to get closer i took two practice amps i turned into speaker cabs and wired them up in parallel so i had 3x8 ohm speakers wired in parallel. This worked great for a while but recently theres been alot of loud crackle. Like when you plug in an instrument but way louder and harsher. Im running just one 8 ohm now and every time the guitar makes a noise that loud crackling happens. I tested it with my bc rich with humbuckers and thats when it makes the noise the most, my strat doesnt seem to trigger the noise at all. My 8 ohm celestion cab is for the tube amp im building anyways so i was just wondering what the problem is here.

Tubes and Hybrids / 6l6 power amp
July 20, 2016, 05:46:33 PM
Does anyone have a good power amp circuit using one or two 6L6 tubes? I need a power amp for a high gain preamp circuit using 2 12ax7s

Tubes and Hybrids / Re: 6v6 power amp circuits
July 16, 2016, 12:55:09 PM
I was just wondering how feasible it would be seeing as 1 tube is every so slightly less work then 3 or 4 lol. Im working on building my first full tube guitar amp. Im going to build a fender champ clone first then replace the preamp section with a marshall preamp circuit i found. I didnt know if i should just keep the single 6v6 power amp or go for a little bit more power so i could play with some friends.

thanks! would you have any suggestions for a single tube circuit at 40 watts? using a different tube obviously.

Tubes and Hybrids / 6v6 power amp circuits

How many watts is a single 6v6 tube power amp typically, like in the fender champ. And is there a way i can use multiple to get 30-40 watts. Does anyone have a schematic for this?

Amplifier Discussion / How digital amps work
July 02, 2016, 06:41:46 PM
Ive played on alot of digital amps, particularly the line 6 spiders, fender mustang, and marshall (jcm? Some marshall modeling amp) and i was wondering how they work. Is there a processor in the preamp? How hard would it be to build a simple programmable amp like the mustang (it could run off arduino?). Im just a curious noob any help is appreciated
