I have a Celestion G12 P80 12" speaker and some pineboard. A  1X12 cab seems an obvious project. Any opinions on dimensions? I see some commercially available ones include  350x275x350(portable),  550x460x290 (Orange), 433 x 445 x 233 (Fender).
My joinery skills are reasonable

Go with what works for you. 8|
Larger will generally give a better sound but past a certain point it does nothing.
Just Don't make the box too shallow from front to back 200mm min.
Things to consider;
Work out how you want to mount the baffle i.e. screws from back or from front.
Don't mount the grill cloth directly on the baffle face as it will flap at high volume.
Add a strip around the edge of baffle board to keep it raised.
Closed back will sound a bit different than open back.
Should be plenty of plans on the net to give you ideas.
Phil.

If it is a bass cab you are building, this may be of help, although some principles will probably be the same if it is for guitar.
