after playing around with the LM386 I decied to search for some of the discontinued chips in the same series. At my local electronics surplus store I picked up two each of : LM380 (2.5W), LM383(7W) and LM388 (1.5W).
Does anyone have any experience with these chips for use in guitar amps?  Any sample schematics?

The data sheets are out there and have a basic power amp schematic on them. I have not heard of any amps using them but they show promise. Good luck.

The LM383 is essentially the same thing as the TDA2003 - and works pretty good.

I have seen the lm380 used with success in quite a few commercial applications, but the heat sink of the LM380 is the PC board (four of the pins need soldered to heat sink)

Not familiar with th LM388.

I agree with JasonG, just google the numbers, and download the national data sheet pdf files - these have excellent suggested circuits!

good luck :)
