Amplifier Discussion / Re: Line 6 Spider 3 amp
August 30, 2010, 01:09:05 PM
reset:

Spider I, II, III, IV, Micro, and Valve Series: Hold down the A (or clean) button as you turn on the power and hold the button for 5-8 seconds.

If that doesn't work you might try completely unpluging for several hours. letting all the computer capacitors drain.

The innards of these are somewhat like a pentium 3 era computer (oversimplification).

These computer amps likewise should never be operated without a surge supressor FWIW.

However the computer COULD be toasted.

disregarding all the mojo hype....the hype artists didn't invent the tone ring...Fender did sort of...It was used in some early Fenders

Showman anyway  not sure which ones used it. Hype didn't cause the name "tone ring" AFAIK the name was "borrowed" from a similiar item which is an essential part of resonators and banjos. Not 100% sure I was a kid then. First one I saw was at Newport around 62...was a child accordian prodigy then not a guitarist..j :lmao:

Clarify: in a resonator the "tone ring" sits under the cone and focuses/brightens/tightens the sound...cheap unamplified resonators without one sound dead...I assume fender was trying to brighten the sound of the amp with it.

QuoteI've had it for years, no real issues until I had a headscratching issue with a less than ideal mixer plugged into the bal input.

Upon lifting the hood I found to my horror that the cannon had pin 1 and 3 tied

you were lucky...I've usually found those cheats when I plug my board into someone's amp and turn on the phantom power for my mikes.....POOF.....the smell of hot plastic...

actually mojotone provides some pretty good kits for repro fenders

the POINT of a tone ring (disregarding hype) is  for an old tweed copy where the chassis hangs down the back...it allows you to velcro the grill ala peavey and r&r the speaker without dismantling the amp...Convenient when making "tweed" "copies"

However that supplier is a bit steep for something you can make with a 4 foot brake and a wire welder :D

But it did provide a convenient picture.

tone ring link:

http://www.mojotone.com/amp-parts/Hardware/Mojo-12-Tone-Ring

A tone ring setup will place the speaker flush with the front of the cabinet...not protruding, but still could have front access for mounting. Very useful on tweed deluxe type cabinets etc. Don;t have to remove amp to get at speaker.   speaker is mounted on the tone ring which is mounted on a second partial baffle.. hard to describe see pics in link.

If one is just looking for good sound...not a pedal....take a look at the schematic for a Peavey TG Raxx TB Raxx

(full 2 12ax7 preamp)

re speaker at very front of cab
mount the speaker on the back of the baffle

use a tone ring  (sets the speaker back)

as far as dimensions... it makes little difference unless you calculate ALL the specifics of the speaker used....use a replacement later and it's all for nought.

and yes the original marshall cabs didn't take ANY of this into account. Nor any of the fender showman amps etc etc.

if closed back the ports should be ~ 1/2 the speaker area...diameter (or of  a size that equals the area of a round hole half the speaker diameter if rectangular) that's so you don't get wind noise...not for exotic physics.

Also if you're sealing the cab...SEAL with calk liquid nails etc  again wind noise...  oh and stuff them about half full of insulation.  need more power for sealed cabs though....not for AX84

Isn't Music a second major there? or has that changed?

Amplifier Discussion / Re: Peavey XXL repair!

I'd keep the heritage...It has one trick that a lot of people never think of...you can freeze the sweep of the phaser at a particular spot . I use that on stage to mimic a strat quack when I'm using a 335 or LP instead of changing guitars.

It's a versatile piece of equipment and has been my backup for a long time. I also use it's power amp via the DI output on my 50 Watt JCM sometimes for outside venues for extra push. (through 2 old Sunn Beta cabs)

mix and match time :D

Great now you have an amp that you might be able to use at home...at night...without a court appearance.... :tu:

You might try running the thing that way into a nice small 10"' (or two)for good tone at low volume...

I do that with my Carvins (carvin only makes 100watt SS amps)

My personal favourite for this is an old Sound City 2X10 ported cab (especially for recording) with Alnico 10s.

but...

At house volumes the 10" Crate Gx20M 10" sounds almost as good.(and much cheaper)

from what I have read...this thing has..pushpull transitors to a transformer mimicking tubes. Sounds like early SS amps sort of...

Until these posts I had thought this thing was an hybrid.

Interesting.

And the "breakdown" seems more like Mellissa Etheridges. :D

I would really like to see that Schematic too...

There is at the moment another source of good budget guitar speakers.

Carvinguitars.com is currently selling their "british" speaker, which was their speaker for the SS SX series fro a long time for $29

Carivn on EBAY is selling the vintage 12 for about the same price. This is the belair (vintage tube) speaker

Both speakers have identical electrical specs. Not sure if there is any difference at all other than label.

They are rates at 70 watts

1.It's not a BAD little amp...
2.It's a FENDER.
3.From a small club stage it can pretty much look (and with a couple of pedals sound) like a 65 Princeton Reissue or Weber/MOJO copy(400-1400 plus the work)
4.And the person wanting to build it is apparently not in the US where they can buy one from Musicians Friend or Sweetwater for $99 with free shipping.

That's my take on it.

is the static present in the "regular" guitar through signal ? or just the midi pickup portion.?

If only using the midi synth sound...it could be some shielding missing between audio portion and computer...or just simply something like a level pot...a wire too close to the computer portion,,,, did they leave something (sheilding) out putting the new input board in?

The midi portion is likely to not be causing the static unless there's some REALLY noisy memory.

Sorry I can't help more...but my synth access guitars go into a 4 computer studio rig not a stand alone processor.

FWIW JM synth access is REALLY good if you need a track for a sax etc and don;t have or can't afford one...(or don't  know how to play one) .It also takes a lot of drudgery out of scoring what you're writing. Very handy paper trail for copyright suits too. You can print out all the scores of the piece as it evolved
