I just see 15 books about the wonderful world of tube amps.I feel that the S.S. amps are under appreciated work horses.I have a 1980 Bandit 65 Combo that's been, beat, jumped on,thrownout a window and it still works, sounds fine, and gets the job done.I just wish that some of these old classics got some of the respect that they deserve! They are under valued, most have a great sound, are simple to work on.I just wish one book would be published on the history and evilution of the S.S. guiitar and bass amps.

I was wondering if anyone knows of a book on old school S.S. guitar/bass amps.I am mainly looking for the Sunn,Peavey,Crate"SLM",Kustom,etc.,etc.older stuff with very few early IC's maily single transistor designs.Any ideas or leads?

Thank you for the reply,This is just my 1st run in with Very large can computer grade electrolics from the late 1970's.These make most high voltage motor starts look like wimps,as far as physical size and weight.

I got the Kustom lead 3 akrakin. It used a old triodial I forgot I had buried my years ago in the garage,"see it pays to clean it out once in awhile"I found the root cause was a bad 5 watt resistor and 5 watt 12 volt zener. Now to my question,I tried to reform the two 4500 mfd 50 volt, 30+ year old GE large can, screw top terminal caps.No go they are shot.I used 4-2200 mfd 63 volt twist top"tab" to replace them"2 in par.".The orginal caps are the size of a 12 once can of coke"no kidding"exact replacements are $100.00+ each in the Allied catalog.I am worried about the diffence in phyical size"plate area etc."Will my setup holdup?Or any ideas for cheaper replacements?I feel I am over my head on this one,by the way the Kustom has 4 power transistors,TO-3 package"claimed 130 watts"and only 1 IC in the whole amp.Very old school.

I have decieded to try to restore this amp.I feel its heavey, but its a 70's Kustom, and that in itself makes it one of the new unknown classics!

I am sorry,I forgot my all time favorite way to get cheap speakers.Look for a local Ebay store in close driving distance of your house.Keep am eye out with that stores listing's.Heavy items like cabs, amps can ussally be picked up cheaply becase no one wants to spend big bucks shipping on a 30 year old cab that wieghts 65 pounds. Most stores allow local pickup, without any other cost, but some do charge an extra fee,E-mail them before you bid!!

I depends on what you want?REAL cheap,go out garbage pickup day and ride around looking the night before"don't laugh,I have gotten a couple of nice speakers out of thrownout organs,1960's large cabinet radio sets"anico Jensen's"extension film projector sound cabs."12" speaker ussally on take off cover on projector".Flea markets, garage sales, hamfest, craigslist"under electronics and musical instruments.Local goodwills, salvation army's stores, look for all above and older speaker cabs, some of the older 1960-70's stero 3 way's 10-12" wolfers don't make a bad guitar or bass cab driver. If you want new checkout MCM electronics speakers.

I am not a pro or con SS ver. Tube,I am a 55 year old guitar playing rocker.I have more than my share of amps, both tube and ss.I have a Kustom Lead 3 with a 1978 QC label inside the chassis. The P.T. is fired in it.Its a 2 channel with voicing "mixer" for the 2 channels with master volume,130 watt. The thing weights 45 pounds for the head alone.Should I invest in a new P.T. or part the 2 pre-amp,voicing,power amp board?I wonder if anybody would be intrested in parts on the hoof? The boards would be ALOT cheaper to ship than a 45 pound head.Ant ideas or input.
