Do you have any of the tube/mosfet amp schems?

I've not seen any on the net. When I last looked for one, Crate wants you to buy it from them.

Amplifier Discussion / Where to get transformers???
March 19, 2008, 03:17:04 PM
I'm looking at a LM1875 amp kit. The power supply requires a 120/60VA/35VCT transformer. Where is a good place to find such a monster?

I stopped by my local RS yesterday to pick up some pcb board and ferric chloride. They only had dual clad board and NO ferric chloride. The current mobile phone salesman working there told me they don't carry it anymore. What's a good source for this stuff online?

Also, I came across a recipe for etchant that is a mix of muriatic acid and hydrogen peroxide. Has anyone used this? And what were your results?

Yeah, now that I'm considering this amp, I was looking over the pdf and noticed the image was reversed left to right. I haven't done any board etching yet, but I have looked into it and the image is usually backwards. I see the image/mask is oriented as a finished board would normally look.

I'm still not sure what you mean when you say flipped. Are you simply turning the chip or are you bending the legs the other way?

This will be my first SS project so I'm wondering what type of components to order. It looks like what I would normally use in a tube amp would be overkill (and expensive  :loco ) for such low voltages.

Also, would running this a 12V cause any problems?

Glad you got that sorted out.  :)  I think I'll give this one a try.

What exactly did you mean when you said 'flip the chip legs upsidedown' ?

Thanks teemuk. That's pretty much what I was thinking.

Amplifier Discussion / Preamp question
February 27, 2008, 05:21:17 PM
Would it be possible to take a dist circuit such as the Eighteen over at ROG and use it for a preamp to a LM1875 based power amp? And would it also be possible to build said amp so that a different setup such as a pedal board could be inserted into the circuit at the power amp thus bypassing the builtin preamp? If not, please educate me as to why. Thanks!

No doubt, caution is utmost!  OK, I'll give it a go when I get back home. Thanks

Amplifier Discussion / Power transformer question.
February 25, 2008, 09:03:23 PM
I have a working transformer that came out of a Crate 80 watt tube/mosfet amp from the 90s. It has no markings on it and Crate apparently doesn't give away their schems. How can I tell what the secondaries provide? Would it be as simple as hooking it up and measuring the secondary leads with a meter?

Gotcha!  :tu:

Unfortunately, that won't be the last dumb question you guys hear from me.  :-\

Amplifier Discussion / Inverting/non-inverting?

These are new terms I am seeing over and over with SS electronics. What exactly does inverting/non-inverting mean?

Yeah, I've been following Stephane's projects for a while now.

Actually I was surprised how well the minty drives my 4x12. But a reasonable
listening volume is the best it can do in its current configuration. Nothing left
for those moments!

I have a lot to learn with the solid state side of things. :'(

QuoteFirst, welcome to the board!

Thanks!  :)

QuoteSecond, I do know about a lot of LM386 designs, but not the "minty amp."  I would assume it's this: http://www.mintyamps.com/ ?

Yes, that would be the one.

QuoteDo you have a schematic to share with this?  It looks like it is probably similar to the Little Gem from runoffgroove.com

No. For some reason, they have chosen not to publish a schematic. I haven't had time to sit down and draw one up from the pcb. I imagine it is pretty similar.

I will look into the LM1875 amp, thanks!  :tu:
