Hey guys! It's been a long time since I was on here! But I think you guys will help a lot more then UG... Last time I posted there they told me "sell everything and buy a decent amp"...
You might remember me from this post http://www.ssguitar.com/index.php?topic=1785.0

Ok well here's my current gear...

My current setup is LTD kh-202 into akg wireless into behringer v-amp pro send g major send v-amp pro into peavey bandits power map input all controlled by fcb1010 midi controller

The v-amp seems to suck my tone, and do horrible things to it, my guitar has almost no sustain and just doesnt sound "real" enough to me... So I decided I would try plugging my guitar directly into my Laney PL100 Twin which has terrible tone pots that are scratchy and sounds really trebly as an amp... but then I ran out the "send" of that amp and into the "power amp in" of my peavey bandit and I was shocked... It sounded like a real guitar! nice and crunchy on the dirty channel and really nice cleans. The response of my guitar was so nice! Playing fast, sweeping etc just felt like it was instant, I guess with the v-amp there must have been latency issues? :s

Here's a picture of the laney after I refurbished it all and replaced the writing on the front:

But the whole point of this thread is to ask, how plausible is it to take the laney's preamp out of the amp and mount it into a rack unit? I'm good with electronics as long as I'm not starting from scratch, I can modify things quite well. I would replace all the pots with new ones (how do I go about finding out what rating each pot is?) and replace all the input and output jacks. I haven't taken the laney apart in a long time and I have no photos of the inside but I will probably do that tomorrow and post it here :) I hope it would fit in a standard rack unit either single or double in height...

Then I'll take the v-amp out of my main rig and just use it for recording :)

Amplifier Discussion / Laney Pro-Linebacker PL100 Twin

Hey guys :)

My school had this old amp that was never used and well I talked my way into them giving it to me :D
When I got it, it was in terrible shape, the front grill was all bent and a spider was in it :/ and the whole thing was rusty, see below

So I went ahead and took it apart, straightened the front grill out, removed the spider... lol, and the front panel, all the knob details were coming off so I designed an entirely new layout on Photoshop, printed it on 3 pieces of paper, cut them out, and sanded back the panel. Put a coat of acrylic lacquer on the panel, placed the paper where it had to go, the lacquer acting as a glue, then lacquered over it about 5 or 6 times, letting it dry in between then let it dry for a few hours. At the same time sanded back the grill and the speaker holders underneath it and they got a fresh spray of black paint. I re wired the speakers also with home theater system cutoffs dad found at work. I also hand brushed every screw on the amp at least 6 times to get a decent coat of paint on them as well.

Heres what it looks like now -

As you can see it came out a hell of a lot better, but I have one problem, a lot of the pots are scratchy when I turn them, how can I clean pots? other than that the amp is awesome and has currently replaced my Peavey Bandit 112 as my main amp :D

Hey guys!

I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section, I couldn't decide where it belong, if anywhere... I know this is an amp forum but you guys were such great help when I needed it that I thought you guys could please help again.

Anyway to the point... I use a distortion pedal for my dirty tone and I have a TC Electronics G Major for my effects. I cant afford a midi controller so instead I'm using the external control input of the G Major with a keyboards momentary switch to switch between two groups of effects for clean and dirty tones. So obviously my problem here is I need to press 2 pedals at once (Distortion and Momentary) to get my desired clean and dirty tones.

My solution to this problem is, by using one of the G Majors built in relays, I can use it to switch on a bypass looper and then use the momentary switch to activate the relay. So I went ahead, bought 5 mono jacks, 2 LED's, a DC input jack and a DPDT Relay. This worked, however I never added an on/off switch. So I sat down and thought of what else I could add to this. I decided I want a on/off LED, 2 inputs that are chosen by a switch - each with an LED (I want two inputs - one on the back and one of the front - so I can connect one to my wireless and have one on the front for if I want to plug straight in, this box comes first in my effects chain) and finally an LED for either loop on or Bypassed. So enough of my rambling, I drew up a schematic and wanted to check with you guys whether it looks correct and whether anything in it is overkill such as the DPDT relay that controls which input is active, could I just use a toggle switch or is a relay going to give a better connection?

Oh one last thing... what resistor's should Blue LED's have to run off 9v and not be blinding? on my original simple bypass looper the LED were so bright they lit up my room with the light off...

Here's the schematic I hand drew, hopefully nothings unclear on it, Its the first schematic I've drawn completely myself.

Thanks in advance for any help/feedback anyone may give :)

Preamps and Effects / Distortion
July 14, 2010, 08:06:35 AM
Hello :)

I found this schematic on the "diyaudio" forum and the guy who posted it "minion", in 2007, said he plays heavy metal and hardcore punk and this distortion suits the style perfectly, which is perfect for me since I'm in a hardcore metal/punk band. Also he states the orientation of the Transistors is reversed in the diagram....

Here's the diagram:

So even though some parts are hard to read I think I managed to draw up this schematic correctly?

What I don't understand is how distortion works, what this circuit is doing, whether this is actually a good design and how do the potentiometers work when there only at the input and outputs?

I intend to eventually learn how to build a full preamp, maybe with this circuit as its lead channel but for now this is my first audio based project so I should keep it at least a little simple :)

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

EDIT: sorry if my schematic is hard to read... photobucket shrunk it down...

The Newcomer's Forum / Hello! :)
July 07, 2010, 05:22:17 AM
Hi!  :)

I'm new to the forum and thought I'd introduce myself, My name is Dylan, I'm 17 and I live on the Gold Coast, Australia.
I have been playing guitar for 6 - 7 years now and I have been playing around with electronics since I was a child.
I'm in a forming band, which is finally starting to get together now we have enough members.

I own the following equipment: -

LTD kh-202 electric guitar
Peavey Bandit 112 combo amplifier
TC Electronics G Major multi effects rack unit
BOSS MT-2 metalzone distortion pedal
AKG wireless transmitter/receiver
US-122 Audio/Midi usb interface

I'm extremely interested in building my own amps and effects and I strive to become an electrician.

I have joined this forum because I want to learn how to build amps, I play mainly metal so I want to eventually build a high gain preamp and a clean preamp, or just a preamp with 2 channels? and a power-amp as well, once I can afford a 4x4 speaker cab. I would like to build solid state just for the fact that tubes don't interest me, needing to replace them everything 6 - 12 months and them being fragile just seems annoying to me and I also really REALLY dislike tube snobs... tubes seem so outdated?

So really, all in all, I'm asking where should I start?

Thanks :)
