Amplifier Discussion / Re: Fender red knob amps -
April 11, 2011, 12:12:33 PM
Yeah they sound alot better once you change out the red knobs  :lmao:
I heard that rumor about them when they came out , and that's all it was and is. if you setup you amp correctly , 90%   it will sound fine.

Amplifier Discussion / Re: Watts vs Volume (db)

Great 1st post indeed Sound-Pro
however , there are many way's to get more volume out of your amp , the easiest way is to add a more efficient speaker , or multiple speakers that works fairly well.
Joecool what 100 watt amp do you have that has only 1 speaker , to compare to a 10 watt .
my 100 watt amps blow away ANY 10 watt amp with as many speakers as you want to attach to the 10 watt amp with my 100 watt am on 1 lol lol lol

Did this amp work before you replaced the pots? other than being scratchy. if so either those are the wrong pots or perhaps while you where soldering them in you got a little bit of solder on a solder pad next to on of the pots. when you say you plugged into a poweramp did you input a signal to the amp your having trouble with to see if the preamp had a output thru the power amp?

Caps are cheap if you think a cap is possible bad replace it , like Enzo said when someone is paying you to repair a amp or anything else , it is cheaper for you and the customer to just replace any cap that you may think is defective , if a cap is leaking tar , bulging or has any other visable defect replace it , it may work now , but that cap will go out.

you can use Hi Fi speakers in lower wattage amp projects fairly well , however once you start pushing in the neighborhood of 20 watts then it's time to invest in at least 1 good MI speaker.

always turn off power and remove fuse's and check with a ohm meter, to address a the impedance question , if the impedance of your speakers drops below 2 ohms on a tube amp yes it will damage your amp (the output transformer) . Now back to the tubes not warming up , after you have good fuse's installed and you have voltage on the fuse's on the preamp tubes check pins 4, 5, 9 , these are the pin's that connect to the heaters on the tubes if you don't have a heater voltage your amp will not work.

I agree , IMHO you would be better off to reengineer the reverb drive circuit for more reasons than one , I have played thru this amp when it was relatively new, the reverb wasn't all that great. I couldn't find a diagram for this amp but if it's the same reverb unit installed in the 1474 then it's a relatively simple modification.

Enzo is right use the effect loop to check for quality of signal if it is ok there the go on to the master volume and power amp section of the amp.
