Amplifier Discussion / Re: The nelson 6W miracle (?)
October 03, 2006, 04:06:09 PM
It doesn't seem as if anyone, including nelson, has built this yet... or they haven't reported back with the results... hopefully someone over at the other boards will know...

Not that I could figure out what's going on if you can't, but I can't actually read the project pdf... comes out all jumbled.. I suspect it's a mac thing.

I think Dan-o's pico cricket is what willy's talking about (bottom of page)...

Cool! Thanks.

Sorry to hear you won't be building for a while. Your stuff always looks so good!

Well, I definately don't know enough to convert a circuit to +/- rails, but there might be some hints in the six band eq project over at general guitar gadgets (http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=216&Itemid=241). They say you can run it off either, but I don't exactly know how they're converting it. I agree, though, it does seem like it would be fairly straight forward.

I don't remember what the max volt for the tlc2272 (could look at data sheet again) in the tonemender, but I'm pretty sure it can't take too much (10v or so?). I suppose you could sub something else in there...

Well, the "blackface" looks quite a bit like ROG's tonemender (http://www.runoffgroove.com/tonemender.html) but, ironically, they use fets instead of the tlc2272 chip. You could just stick the tonemender tonestack in the blackface and have more options (marshall and fender) with the added 'bonus' of fet tube tones. Does it sound better then the tonemender? Seems like the blackface would have lots more headroom and output since it runs at 18 volts or more.

I'd be interested to know what impediance and input signal level the chip power amp wants since redcircuits actually tells you that info about their circuit...

Yeah, I keep looking for a preamp for my chipamp project and I keep coming back to the esp project... seems relatively easy and straight forward. I'm not interested in anything that does too much, I got stompboxes for all that. Just something with good boost, tone stack, and can take pedals ok.

In any case, please let me know how yours turns out and what mods you did... and if there's anything you would've done differently!

wow, thanks. What a detailed discription. That's very impressive and actually very helpful. I'll check the trim pots as soon as I get the amp back home... Hopefully one of them just got knocked out of wack... Although I suppose most of those parts wouldn't be too expensive to replace if they have failed.

Did you make a perf board layout (or etch your own pcb)? Any chance you could post or send to me?...

Ok. I'm back again with this beast... I put in a fan and after looking at the power supply more closely it looked like someone replaced or changed the four smaller diodes on the power supply (CR205-CR208)... so I replaced those for good measure. I also went over all the solder joints on the power supply and power amp. Didn't look like anything was loose, but I resoldered everything that looked even slightly questionable. I took it to practice and, poof, same problem as before. I tried using a booster as a preamp and, yes, same problem as before. Must be in the power amp or power supply.

Teemu (or anyone else), can you help me with the bias circuit/diodes... I'm not sure what/where these are or how to adjust/fix them. I've stared at the schemo, but I don't understand enough of what's going on in their to figure anything out...

Thanks!!

Good to know. I sort of forgot about all the good designs for small practice amps out there... little gem, ruby, etc.

Amplifier Discussion / Amp kits...

This kit might be useful for a practice amp.

This one's got a bit more power (I assume it would be easy to convert to run in parallel):

And finally, a guitar preamp kit. I wish there were more details about this one. I'm curious, but doubt that it would sound that great. Seems a bit pricey, too:

Preamps and Effects / Re: Powering your preamps

I see... yes, that's the sort of solution I was looking for... How would you change the components if you needed a different voltage, I wonder?

Did you decide on a preamp, turbo?

Looking good. Thanks for the pics. Please post when it's done too!

mmm... So that extra bit of current would make a difference? I'm no electrical engineer... I've had a hard time wrapping my brain around current vs. voltage. Theoretically, can you run too much current into a chip? I imagine so, but, again, I'm not sure how to think about current.

Maybe I'll look for an article somewhere explaining (in very basic terms) current... Thanks.

Ah... I see. Thanks chaps. for some reason I thought it was 25 + 25 volt secondary instead of 12.5 + 12.5. I just didn't look carefully enough. I've been searching around the internet for a deal on a transformer, but I'll probably just go with the toroidal. That can power two chips, where as the cheaper one turbolx5oh pointed out only powers one, correct?

I haven't found anywhere that can compete with part express, yet. Except maybe ebay, but you have to be lucky.
