Amplifier Discussion / Carlsboro Marlin 6-150 III
September 11, 2021, 03:46:53 AM
There's one of the above for sale locally for €25. Selller doesn't even know if it works. Worst case it's a useful enclosure, pots, jacks, maybe power supply. Any thoughts?

What software do you recommend for drawing schematic,  free or not?

Tubes and Hybrids / Reduce signal from preamp.
January 19, 2021, 06:47:34 PM
I have built amp with a starved plate 12au7 preamp feeding a solid-state power amp module. There's a 100k audio pot controlling the signal going to the power amp. Whats the best way to pad the input to the power amp? A resistor in series somewhere?

The Newcomer's Forum / Soldering Iron Tips
January 11, 2021, 07:34:44 AM
I got a cheap 30W soldering iron as a stopgap.

https://www.cutpricewholesaler.com/diy/diy-accessories/bb-si101-blackspur-30w-soldering-iron-with-pointed-tip
Unfortunately, the tip lasted approx 30 minutes of use. The tip is 75mm long, approx 3.5mm diameter and held in place by two grub screws. Does anyone know of a better quality tip that would fit?

Amplifier Discussion / Pedalboard amp
July 08, 2020, 06:07:27 AM
Just finishing my pedalboard/ box which includes a power amp plus all my pedals. 2 switchable inputs, 12v power via dc jack, and one output jack to cab. Signal path is
Mooer ABY pedal
Boss DS-1, Danelectro Fab overdrive, Behringer Tremolo, Behringer Delay, Mooer Shimverb, Behringer GDI2, Power Amp. Yes, I am a fan of cheap pedals.
Needs a bit of cable management maybe. Not shown is the lift-off lid to be attached with case clips. Demo to follow.

Software / Zoom G5 software
February 11, 2020, 04:22:20 AM
I have a Zoom G3 which I want to connect to a PC for recording. It originally came with Cubase LE but that doesn't seem to be available any longer.  Not sure if the G3 is even compatible with Windows 10.
Any ideas? https://www.zoom.co.jp/products/guitar/g5-guitar-effects-amp-simulator-pedal

Tubes and Hybrids / 12 v tube preamp
December 17, 2019, 12:25:40 PM
I've seen a few references to building tube preamps e.g. https://www.instructables.com/id/The-ValveLiTzer-Low-voltage-Tube-Booster/
https://www.instructables.com/id/The-Valve-Caster-20-Tube-Boost-and-Overdrive/
Any comments on whether this is worth doing e.g. will it really sound any different to  solid state version?

Are Rechargeable 9v batteries a viable option for pedals?

Just asking cos I have some, and I broke my fx power supply. The ones I have claim 350 mAh capacity but interestingly the only major brand ones I can find are Duracell with 170 mAh. Are the claimed mAh values reliable in your experience?

Amplifier Discussion / Reverse polarity protection
February 07, 2019, 05:08:25 AM
I neglected to add reverse protection to my LM386 amp and broke. It is basically the Little Gem/Smokey amp.
https://goo.gl/images/3dqb9b
It powers on but no output. I am checking all the caps and the IC.
Anything else I should check?
What type of diode should I (have) use(ed) for reverse polarity?

Preamps and Effects / Strange pedal issue
November 06, 2018, 09:25:19 AM
I have a guitar cable with angled plug on one end and straight on the other. My Boss DS1 pedal will only work with the angled one in the pedal and the straight into the guitar. The cable works both ways when it goes directly from guitar to amp.  Is that normal?

Amplifier Discussion / 1x12" cabinet dimensions.
October 28, 2018, 07:05:56 PM
I have a Celestion G12 P80 12" speaker and some pineboard. A  1X12 cab seems an obvious project. Any opinions on dimensions? I see some commercially available ones include  350x275x350(portable),  550x460x290 (Orange), 433 x 445 x 233 (Fender).
My joinery skills are reasonable

Tubes and Hybrids / Recommended Tube Amp kitd
October 08, 2018, 11:58:42 AM
Feel like I'm ready to try a tube build from a kit. Any recommendations for a first timer (including "don't do it" or "don't ask here"). I am  thinking something simple on 240 v 50hz mains power.

Amplifier Discussion / Power on LED.
September 12, 2018, 03:53:15 PM
I added a 'power on' LED to my TDA2003 amp and it is really draining the battery. Not sure if attached schematic is clear but it is between input ground and the + supply pin on the board. It's a green LED rather than the usual green with 2k resistor and 9v battery.

The Newcomer's Forum / Stripboard woes
August 29, 2018, 11:58:16 AM
Probably because of my soldering technique, I keep breaking the conductive strips on stripboard. Do I just need to user better quality stripboard, improve my technique  or move on to something new? I find I can assemble something, it works but by the time I add pots, switches etc. and put it in an enclosure I find I've broken the conductors.

Amplifier Discussion / Hotone Nano Amp Heads
August 10, 2018, 05:46:15 PM
Have been looking at small SS amp heads with a view to building 10" cab. The Hotone ones for example.  http://www.hotoneaudio.com/products/nanolegacy/Amplifier1/2016/1114/184.html
Are these any different to a small practice amp without a speaker? Any idea of what electronics they use?

The Newcomer's Forum / Centre Negative DC Jack
July 02, 2018, 09:20:23 AM
I've been trying to work this out for myself but it's beaten me.

I have a few small amps which can run off a 9v battery, or a wall wart via a DC jack (which disconnects the battery). I want to change the DC jacks to be 'negative centre' so match my pedals so I can run the amp and pedals from the same supply. Any suggestions for wiring this?
#20
As mentioned in other posts I have 2 of these. How would I wire both to drive  single speaker? Or 2 speakers maybe?
