Yeah I always forget to check those jacks and sockets...Thanks for looking out Roly :dbtu: So yeah check those out first. Hopefully it will be simple fix  8)

The first thing I would do is download the schematic if you have not done so yet and get access to a meter. EDIT: I thought I found the Schematic but did not... Taking pictures of the inside of the amp can help you get advice where to check voltages if you do not know.

To me it sounds like the filter caps are not charging up correctly when powered on. I would solder up the joints on the main filter caps if you have not done so. Also, would be a good idea to check voltages before any soldering to see what we are getting at the PS and the filter caps. As all the wise ones have taught me over and over "Do not replace parts until you find the fault first". Words to live and die by...

Cool Roly thanks man!!

Especially for letting me know the recovery time concept as equal or lower for replacements. Now I see the light!  :tu:

Without looking at the schematic it would seem to me that a line out is another name for preamp out. So you are basically taking one amps preamp line level out into the input of another amp preamp. The output is through the 10 watt amp and will not blow out the higher rated speaker. So in other words if it sound good to you then it is good. Does it sound louder? Perhaps but not because you have a 60 watt amp output. It is just a more crafted signal input into the small 10 watt amp w/ a decent speaker. You are amplifying one preamp with another then pushing it only through 10 watt output. Much like people use a front end like Digitech or Line 6 pod preamp processors and put them in front of a clean channel amp.

What do you do though when you travel with the amp to play somewhere? If the prime amp has one of the speaker's terminal accidentally disconnected while playing that will probably blow out the amp's output chip. As far as electricity is concerned a line out is safe to plug into another amp or mixer. If you were to plug a speaker out into a line level input of an amp...??? Well just avoid doing that and your golden!

So anyhow using light bulb limiter I went with a 40 watt bulb and tried to fire up the amp. The result let me know there was still some short on the board. Carefully started looking at other transistors that might be shot and did not find any (I think). Good news is that all the output transistors are still fine and have not been damaged as I used the limiter. I even pulled off Q224 and Q223 from the board, as they need to be removed for testing, and was relieved that they were fine.

I found an ultra-fast-recovery diode that was open when measured on the board. Pulled it off the board and it definitely is part of my problem now as it is shorted out. I have attached the datasheet for this part below in the hopes that someone can recommend a good modern replacement part. I have some rectifier diodes around that might be good replacements, but will have to research the specs of this part more. Can anyone help suggest a good replacement for a diode rl2z???<<< as it reads on the actual diode (on the schematic it is part D222 SF22) Thank you for any input greatly appreciated!!  :tu:

Edit: I am really having trouble looking at the data sheets and matching up this part. Reverse voltage, forward voltage drop and recovery time has me confused as I go to Mouser or somewhere to find the part. I am thinking that this part will get me through the night...

Can someone confirm this as I feel a bit confused, thanks

So, personally I would inspect the inside of the amp to see if anything is detached or shorted out. Thumping it might not always be effective but sometimes can help determine for loose connections. I would be looking for solder joints that are cold or something loose on the output to the speaker area.

Also, being able to test voltages on the amp will help make sure the power is good through out the amp too. Schematic is attached for all to help if you continue with troubleshooting.

I read some people on the Marshall forum saying that the Power supply is no good on these amps. Then they double the capacitance of the main filter caps and installed some kind of higher spec PSU. All that and they never posted one thing about voltages on the amp. So, poo poo on that idea!!

Personally, without looking at the schematic I would assume to start by whacking it a bit... Also, clean that headphone jack with some contact cleaner and see if that helps.

Okay I have now installed all the parts... I have a question before I proceed... I have found that Q224
Q223 Q219 Q220, Q218 Q217 when tightened to heat sink do not create continuity as there is thermal installation pad that prevents collectors from touching the heat sink. Same thing can be said about applying Q124 Q123 Q119 Q120, Q118 Q117 on the other side of the board, no beep on meter suggesting the heat sink is grounding out the collectors. I tested this carefully but then once I connect both sides the collectors on Q224 Q223 Q219 Q220 and collectors on Q124 Q123 Q119 Q120 all make ground contact to heat sink. Also, tests ground to bridge rectifier +/- legs in the circuit to the heat sink. The other transistors Q218 Q217 and  Q118 Q117 (linear outs on each rail) do not make continuity ground to the heat sink.

So in short, I have ruled out that the thermal insulation is the cause. As testing for grounds to the heat sink on each side do not occur. The heat sink only becomes grounded to those mentioned transistor's collectors when I tighten both sides. Independently tightened one side or the other shows the thermal pad is insulating the collectors. So I just want to be sure this is normal before proceeding.

So is this normal? I am afraid that I am gonna fry these transistors or something else could be bad. I am then thinking in circuit this is normal. What do you guys think? THanks ???

Edit: One last thing to note is that there is resistance from heat sink to the collector ranging and changing between 7-17 ohms. Which really makes me think it is just in circuit, especially after looking over the schematic for a bit.

Thanks Roly just have self doubts sometimes and too many 2nd thoughts. It seems I am on track as my transistors have arrived today and tomorrow the other parts should be here to finish the job. Always appreciate the feedback, thanks. :tu:

The Newcomer's Forum / Re: Java 7 Update 11 Warning!

Lets just say I work for some hotel chain that is well known and global. They run Oracle DB and a GUI that depends on Java software. On Sunday the entire system was down and being patched. All the hotels were forced to go to manual mode. That is like going back to the 1970's or 1980's for the day!! Makes you thankful for technology after said and done/repaired. Also, makes you hate it!

Does this look like a good replacement for these coils since my friend is wanting to change them just in case.

Replacement part:

Original Part:

Edit: Also, I am thinking the 7A fuse should be fast acting type, but cannot figure this out exactly. TL is on the fuse so it must Time Lag type?? ooops ignore that last one... lol. It was a basic UL on it not TL...  :duh

It seems more and more that something really bad has infected the Adsense and google analytics scripts on MEF. I for one have not stopped going on the site and Tboy is definitely working on a fix. I mean let's face it MEF is a priceless site!! SSguitar is priceless too! The main problem is that the infected scripts could be coming from outside sites that connect to the main site. So scanning all the pages in the site is difficult to do... However, Sophos has cleared MEF and now it only looks like badware/google are really showing the site to have infections.

I found that some of the crap at one point is originating from Russian servers... Which is not too uncommon with attacks on websites in the same regard. Many times it is from a Ukraine server somewhere or etc etc etc... However, even then the originating servers that are sending this crap are proxy to the originators of the codes. Then the only last one to blame is really the host servers which one of them is always Google back bone. I saw on VBseo.com website a post about "Has Google been hacked?" there is a post to that original thread. There is an updated posted on 01-11-20013 by Hodsdiash regarding this topic on the forum. When you click the link nothing is there now...? Scroll down and look under "Off-Topic & Chit Chat" section... You will only see the four posts from 2012 regarding the Has google been hacked topic...

http://www.vbseo.com/forums/

At one point I could see the MEF had been hosted on AS48172 OVERSUN....
Russian connection point... Now I don't see that connection at all and only saw it on there for brief period while researching. Kinda strange.
There are even links for this host network that have direct link to microsoft home page...
http://www.microsoft.com/web/hosting/hostingprovider/details/364

Most of the time I see a additional host links on AS29933    OFF-CAMPUS-TELECOMMUNICATIONS - Off Campus Telecommunications... But at one point for a about a day AS29933 was not on this list and AS48172 was... look below to the webpage I am referring to below>>>

Look at this link for info regarding this fact.

Use Google against itself!! Start using startpage.com which uses google influence without tracking your IP address, hence a built in proxy search environment. So, you still search w/ google but you are not tracked like you would be eating those damn devilish Google Cookies!

I say there is nothing wrong with MEF website and will testify in a malware court of law on that one. Set your Javascript to prompt you before ever running on ANY browser that you ever use. To me Java has been a curse in the programming world for way way too long now. Today Homeland security put out an alert about Java holes that are mainly effecting Oracle based database systems. They are telling all to turn off Java(not really javascript this is much more heavy) to avoid troubles. They say they will be issuing a patch on Jan 15th to fix this HUGE issue. Note: that Sunmicrosystems is not yet effected but that is not saying much in the JAVA world. Trust me there is some weird stuff going on lately and always has been, but it seems like the weird factor just got turned up a bit.
