Amplifier Discussion / Re: Weird advice from Line 6
November 13, 2011, 03:15:05 PM
Have you heard back from Line6 yet?  I am curious to hear what they have to say from a technical standpoint about this.

I do think, however, that since you are designing a speaker box for these amps, that you should experiment with lower wattage speakers than what the amps put out.  I have found that going with a lower wattage speaker can color your sound in interesting ways, that aren't always unfavorable.  Of course, it all depends on what sounds good to you.  A lot of people actually use a total speaker wattage of half of the amp output.

Thank you for your replies.  I will try the different preamp as soon as I can and post gut pics, I work long hours 3rd shift with a family.  I really hope to get this fixed!

Juan, the amp is a 40 watt amp, but I will get the actual voltage measurement of it later.  This is very exciting!  I prefer to purchase musical equipment from enthusiasts, keeps this hobby alive!  I sure wish I could get a whole amp from you.  Do you have any sound clips of your amps on here?  I might also be interested in a 100 watt model as well, I think I have another dead 125 watt amp laying around here somewhere...too many projects around here and no work getting done!

I currently do not have a different preamp which I can hook up, but like I said in the above post the distortion seems to be working fine, just there is extremely low volume.  I will post gutshots in a few hours.

JM, That is great.  I have a long dead amp with a perfectly good transformer that would love the heart transplant.  I find your work very professional, and would love to hear what your amp sounds like.  I will be waiting to see if you are willing!

QuoteI'm checking and an international "Small Package" (the ones with the large green stamp) costs very reasonable U$22 for 1Kg/2.2 pounds and U$36 for 2Kg/4.4 pounds.
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmhhhh, the little wheels in my head are turning.

Mr. Fahey,  would you consider sending just a board, a board with the parts, or a populated board?  I am interested and am wondering what you would charge for this.  I am in the northeast USA.

Amplifier Discussion / Ibanez amp issues

Hello all, I am seeking some guidance on the problem in my Ibanez ToneBlaster 100H.  When I turned it on, the volume was basically nonexistent.  I had to dime it just to get a tiny amount of volume.  The distortion still works from what I can hear, so that tells me the problem is in the poweramp section.

There are 2 sources which are suspect to the disorder:

A couple children were flipping the power switch on and off repeatedly while the power was on,

and I hooked up a Boss MegaDistortion which seemed to be acting a little wierd.

Can anyone please give me some guidance?  I can post pictures of the inside of the amp if that will help at all.  Thank you!

Amplifier Discussion / Wonky Crate G40-C
October 10, 2010, 09:46:13 PM
Hello all!  I have a Crate G40-C that has some issues.  Here is the schemo:

Sorry about the bad pics, but they are the only ones I could find, and they are pretty fuzzy, it is hard to make out component values.

This is a 2 speaker amp.  The problem is, when I hook up the working leads, everything is fine for that speaker.  When I hook up the second set with the working set, it makes a high pitched screech that gets exponentially louder the longer it is left on.  When I hook up the bad side by itself, there is nothing, not even static or hum.  The advice I have so far is resolder all the joints, due to the infamous wave-soldering Crate use at the time of this amp.

My questions:  does anyone know what this problem is?  If not, my second question is can I safely bridge the 2 outputs to get the full power of the amp, and how do I do this?  Thank you for any help.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the speaker load is 4 ohms.
