I do notice it more on humid days. Phil you are full of knowledge.   :tu:

That's good, right around target.  Second question is what is VHT short for. That is kicking my butt.

I sprayed it with contact cleaner, and then pulled the connector off to make sure all of the wires were seated and plugged it back in and it sounds good.

I found the problem to be a bad connection on the effects return board. I agree that cheap connectors are used.

Ok, I am back

I built a 16 ohm Dummy Load (came out nice) and using my Basic Stamp Programmer made a 1khz signal and put everything on. I could only come out with 30Watts where Peavey is saying it is 50W RMS using my multi meter, dummyload, and signal using equation (22*22)/16. This is the max I could get out tweaking all of the knobs. My question is: Does this sound right, do I need to use a true signal generator or should the signal I am using work. If this does not sound right should what should I do from here? I do not have access to an oscilloscope. Here is the link to the amp specs http://www.peavey.com/assets/literature/manuals/Classic50_2005.pdf

Once again thanks for all of your help

that's fantastic and I hope one day I will be able to make amps better not just fix them.

What really Does concern me is you've made mention that the power tubes destroyed themselves :o. just replacing the burnt track won't fix that.
Sounds like the whole amp needs to be looked at.
Phil.
It had a bad power tube that when you would tap it, it would arch I didn't see any other problems and voltages were good and that is why I fixed the trace and changed the tubes.

Tubes and Hybrids / sound problems with Peavey Classic 50
November 15, 2009, 03:25:52 PM
Hi all,

I am working on a Peavey Classic 50 and it has some issues that I need help with. It plays loud and plays good but when it is idleing it makes noise that I wish it would not. I have changed all of the tubes. The orginal problem was on of the power tubes burnt out causing a trace to burn up, I replaced it and got the power back. I am having a problem with random sounds (see clips) they vary in strength the first clip and second clips were recorded 5 minutes apart. If I turn the volume up it gets louder and lis louder if I switch to the lead channel. The Classic 50 has a effects bypass which bypass the controls, If I do that it goes away.  Does this sound like a bad connection, ground, or something elese.  ***turn volume down on clip one***

Thanks,
Anthony

No if I turn the volume down it does not pop, it does not matter where the reverb is and will do it on clean, or dirty channel. The Classic 50 has a Bypass where you could enter your own effects which bypass all tone controls and  volume. there it does not pop when I do this. Also with everything set at zero except the main volume it still pops.
I could possibly do a sould byte of this.

I am working on a Peavey Classic 50 and need to know if it is normal for a tube amp to have a speaker POP when coming in or going out of standby with the volume up to about 4? Is there a capacitor I could add to eliminate this?

Thanks,
Anthony

Tubes and Hybrids / Re: First Hybrid

Phatt,
Do you have any schematics of a Chip pre-amp going to power tubes, and is there a way to bypass the output transformer? It seems that the Transformers are why Tube amps cost so much to build.

You can email support@korgusa.com and request a wiring diagram if you are familiar with working on electronics just let them know it is out of warranty if it is. or go to http://www.korg.com/DealerLocator.aspx?type=service for a service center.

So if the harmonic balancer is not working, I should change the 2 diodes? and how does the preamp work if I do not have the reverb tank hooked up or is it part of the reverb circuit and if it is when I turn p1 down which controls input to ic1 it mutes the whole system?

Thanks,
Anthony

I am working on my G100A that is doing well after changing out Q2. well I thought I would check the rest of the unit out to make sure it is working good, If someone could help me out on the Harmonic Multiplier, I am not sure what it does. I changed the photocell because the face looked bad. Turned R6 and it did not change my sound but the bulb gets brighter so I know the circuit is doing something.

2. Since I do not have an oscilloscope I have been using a signal tracer to troubleshoot and that is how I found the bad Q2, I traced out how I think the signal goes, is this correct?

3. The pre-amp is working but my question is I see the input at pin 3 but do not understand where the output gets fed back to the circuit.

Thanks,
Anthony
