Title: No 4 ohm tap?
Post by: Den. on June 16, 2011, 08:31:58 PM
After having a look inside a Peavey Studio Pro 40 amp, I see that the speaker connections come directly off the circuit board.  I don't see an output transformer where a 4 ohm tap might be found.  My plan was to add a switching jack for an 8 ohm extension cabinet.  Am I missing something?  Is there a 4 ohm tap somewhere in there?

Hi Den,
Unless I'm mistaken that is an all SS Amp in which case just connect the other speaker.
The Z matching is only an issue with Valve Amps.

Most SS amps (as in 99.999% of them) have no output transformer, hence no "taps".
The problem can be seen in another way: if your internal speaker is 8 ohms, and the power board *can* drive 4 ohms, then you can add a simple jack in parallel with the internal speaker and add an external 8 ohms one.
How to know if that is possible?
Call Peavey and ask them, although  I guess the answer will be "no".
You can still add a switching jack, which disconnects the internal speaker and allows for an external 8 ohms one ... or a 2x12 or 4x12 cabinet, still 8 ohms.
