Amplifier Discussion / Channel switching options ??
July 05, 2011, 07:50:17 PM
Hi , Im working on a 2 channel guitar amp build and am trying to figure out a good way to do the channel switching .....

I first considered using some sort of fet switching but Ive heard it can alter the sound so now I"m thinking relays ......

First question .....

Are relays suitable for audio channel switching ??

If so will it cause any poping noise when switching ??
If so is there a way to minimize it ??

I was going to use one of the Power amp power rails to power the relays and was wondering if it will cause noise though the power supply when engaging the relays ??

Thanx

Hi Folks, I just wanted to post my latest Guitar amp build for you guys...

It is Parts DIY Kit, Part Consumer gear and part Totally DIY...

It is a 100w Head , it has a Fet opamp front end driveing a 12ax7 Tube preamp with speaker simulators and Ballanced DI Output and effects loop and polarity switches and some other features (it is a Modded PAiA Kit), it has a 15 band EQ with High pass/Low pass and Notch filters , and a 100w DMOS Output stage....

It sounds Freaking awesome , especially for a heavey sound , lots of Harmonics ....

Hi Folks, I"m new here and this is my first Post ...But I am not that new to DIY Electronics as I have built a couple Guitar amps useing IC"s and have built many Mic preamps and Stompboxes and a few Gainclones other music related audio curcuits Pluss my Guitar is a heavilly Modified Ephiphone......

The Guitar amp I use now is a 50w one Based on a LM3886 Power amp IC and a discrete J-fet Preamp stage with tone controlls and 2 Different Overdrive stages which are user selectable....This is a fairly Loud and extremely heavey sounding amp but I now want something with a bit more Power and with a cleaner output ,Something that I can play shows with as my 50w one is loud enough but at that Volume it is hard to get a clean Tone out of it .......

I happen to have quite a few Transistors that would be suitable as output stages and have a couple good Power Transformers (30v,0v,30v-200vA) that should be adequate for building an amp in the 75w range and I have lots of Parts but I am haveing trouble finding a suitable Schematic/Project that would utilize the Parts I have available so I am here to ask you good Folks if you could maybe point me in the right Direction.......

Here are some of the Transistors I have:
MJ11016/MJ11015 30A 120v 200w To-3 Darlingtons
MJE3055/MJE2955 70v 10A To-220
Tip31C/32C 100v 5A To-220
Tip41C/42C 100v 7A? To-220
BD139 80V 1.5A SOT-32
BC550C/560C 50V 100mA T0-92
2N4401/4403 40v 600ma T0-92
2N3904/3906 T0-92
2N2222A T0-92
IRF630 200v 9A N CH-Mosfet T0-220
RFP8P08 80v 8A P-Ch Mosfet  To-220

And I have some Various other Small signal Transistors and some J-fets and all the Caps and resistors and PCB material I need, or at least for the most Part......

So if someone knows of a Guitar/Bass amp project that will utilize the Parts I have or even a Power amp stage that would be awesome.......

Thanx a Lot.....

Cheers
