I was able to do some more testing.
My battery packs just dont have enough current for full volume.
I tried the supply (12VDC 3.2A)I was gonna use but its a switchmode based supply,LOTS of noise,
even with HUGE filter caps  :'(
SO I will have to use something else the amount of volume was very suprising with 3amps available.
I mean it was louder and than I expected definetly close to 12 watts.
Using the 386 as a pre also gave more volume but I must not of had it coupled right as there was noise at certain levels.
Maybe a buffer between the output of the 386 and the tda input?

Also I tried a 4ohm load (3.7) for about 30 minutes and the difference was I didnt like the extra THD 10% 15watts-4ohm vs 1% THD 12watts- 8ohm
and the Really big heat sink actually got fairly warm so 6ohm(tested) is lowest for good sound and smaller heat sink from this chip.

I need to draw out the schematic at this point so I can get expert advice from you guys how to improve further.
All in All I am very pleased so far,I cant wait to try some of the other TDA chips.

If that sound clip is just the amp and no pedals then I am BLOWN AWAY :tu:
Sounds crazy, good nice heavy tone.
Is it possible to translate your PDF to English?
Sorry I only know English and little Spanish.

It would be nice to see if and how he solved the problem.
I think JM s idea about using a different chip is best and cheapest solution too.

Congrats  :tu:
I have never seen one but with the 15"EV spkr sounds like you got a good deal.
You should post some pics-gut shots and what you "stole" it for.
Maybe a sound clip ot two as well.
Congratulations on your new addition.

WowI just read that stuff.
150watts into 8ohms 10% THD really cool but here is what REALLY impressed me.
All on a 35VA power supply, now thats an efficiant amp.
I might attempt that in the future although last time I saw a Power block on the Bay it sold for like 50$ or less I think.
Looks well worth checking out I have heard nothing but good stuff about the Power Blocks.

It would have way more ripple and hum and sound farty and loose.

HEY JM   :duh I KNOW I MEAN CRAP  :lmao:
Yeah it was that simple...

DUDE I love that little Calle amp thats SO SWEET looking!!
DO you mind sharing the schemtic and power supply set up?
It sounds like you have already pioneered what I am trying to do- AWSOME rechargable
with built in charger- I am months and months away from that.
But that has been my goal with moving into chip amps away from pricey tube builds.

I do plan on getting some other TDA chips the 2003,5,6,9 -2030- 2050 -7265(50watter)
When I can afford another Mouser order

Oh thanks on the pedals ,those are a few TS type clones,A RF drive from SEwatt.com, an ROG Omega ,a FF design based on the ROG Sili faceII,a 5 band EQ(not finished),
And a version of Gus Smally's "Rocket"
in the bin are a half dozen completed and tested FF builds waiting for enclosures.
If you look in this pic you will see the amp I built them for its- a remade version of my own using the EVJ platform,Hammond ESE OT, 10 watt EL84 ,Marshall/Fender tone with a Ghia tonestack.

Im sorry I cant speak to the quality of the components.
As for my amps which are early 90s to late 90s models with the exception of the CR212 which is way older.
All my G series amps use regular transformer not toriodal also the electrolitic caps and resistors are of cheaper quality like evrey other mass produced low cost amp.
They all use film caps where needed but again low cost, and the clipping is diode based.
The older CR212 used a bit better quality components and construction including switchcraft components.
The spkrs in all my Crates sound great the 212 amps have the standard issue
"Crate Custom Desgn"12" spkrs that I have been told are Celestion G12 clones with better power handling.
They sound great with my other tube amps as well proly 94 or so db SPL.
I am just saying in case you want to try a used models these are great workhorse amps
for someone just starting to play with a good drummer and small shows.

Now for the model you suggest IDK I have read that "all" new Crate designs use toriodal transformers.
Over at Harmony Central and I think ampage some of the Crate engineers were discussing the new Crate lineup.
You could try Harmony Central for some reviews of your amp.
I have found my opinions of gear are usually the same as the majority of those reviews.
HERE is one musicians review you can find many more

Let me guess, the two jacks below are speaker jacks and their sleeves short to chassis/ground?
Pretty much -You nailed it- one jack is the input the other is usually output when I build pedals or a spkr jack if its an amp.
I had forgot that they were uninsulated jacks (switchcraft)-therefore the input ground was connected to the output :duh
It didn't matter when the spkr needed to be grounded (single suply SE )or building a pedal.
But the load wasnt "floating" when BTL

I wish you guys knew how much hair pulling a cussing(3days worth) that little oversight caused me.
I am thankful I found it BEFORE frying my last chip.I was about to give up.
Again thanks for the info Teemuk I havent pinned my new schematic yet but am looking forward to your opinoin of the pre-amp I made on my own.(I actually calculated the knee points of the filters for it)

HINT the answer and the reason the ICs werent working right is in the fourth picture down ::)

Hey thanks for that Joe
I think I will give it a go and let you know how it works out.
FWIW I will be using this lm3886 build with a spkr/spkrs with a 99db or greater SPL
So getting the max potential isnt key.
I do plan to build another with my toriodal 42VCT 80VA or I have another thats 50 VCT at 3 amps but its not toriodal.

I think I will take your advice and wait until I can get a 200VA tranny before I try bridging two 3886 chips though.

YEP I FOUND IT :tu:
OK Teemuk you were absolutely right it works perfect from the data sheet circuit.
What you said got me looking for where the circuit wasnt decoupled...

Before I explain let me start by saying I mostly have built tube amps and not solid state and the test area I have set up with my breadboards has been used for lots of pedals, and a few 386 based designs.
That being said see if you can spot the problem from these pics- its as clear as the nose on my face.
I sorta feel like an idiot but then again I understand how this happened.

Finally here was the OH so simple solution its the reason I couldnt bridge my 386 chips either,
I thought it was because I was using the high output versions and no heat sink on the DIP8 chips.
Gosh the simplest thing can make a big difference

Really thanks for the effort guys at least its fixed with my 3rd and last chip.
This is my second chip amp build(I have built several 386 amps though)

Hey Teemuk do you think the signal ground should be tied to power ground?
Thats the way I have it now with the signal ground on one bus and the power ground on another and tied together at the pins of the IC.
Also now that its fixed do you think my 386 amp would be OK as the pre instead of taking it from the 386s preamp?
I will post a schematic for this in case anyone else using this chip wants to copy my build.
It sounds fantastic REALLY I am impressed- I got these chips at Apex Jr for .79 cents each.
I am glad I didnt give up it was worth the effort.
I just wish it had more components the and ability to adjust the circuit, like feedback and gain.

Now I have the confidence to start my lm3886 build and found what would have been a problem for that circuit as well before ruining one of those chips or worse. :o

Amplifier Discussion / Heatsinking the LM3886
August 13, 2009, 08:11:00 PM
Hi yet another 3886 question...
I read a thread here that pretty well detailed the options of heat sinking the 3886 chip
Except for a couple of things I would like to clear up before going further.

Is a TO220 insulator big enough (or should I say wide enough)for adaquate thermal transfer?
I have a couple of TO220 mounting kits w/the Mica insulators and was hoping to use that.
It just doesnt quite cover the whole surface to be sinked.

And what do you guys use for mounting these audio chip amps?

Like as in part #s and source I found some Keystone Mica insulators but the one with the largest surface  area was the TO220.

I recently got a free Hammond (I was estatic until I realised it was a transistor version)
ANyway its way ugly compared to yours mines a Dolphin made in 1975.
I was gonna gut it and try to salvage the PA and reverb and the Leslie of course.
But I just cant bring myself to gut a working instrument like that.
I did take out the 12" alnico spkr for some testing(its OK not as nice as an eminence or my Jensen Jets)
I say gut it though if all you can get is 50$ the power supply and all the film caps should be worth more than that, the spkrs, grill cloth,aluminum-all good for amp building.
I will more than likely gut mine later after I get tired of playing it(I dabble on the keys too)

Thanks JM
It was RG who pinned me a list (at DIYstompboxes)of items for my LM3886 build.
It included the 42VCT 80VA toroidal, 2x 6800uf 100V caps a MONTER sink,the 3886 chip
All purchased from Apex Jr for a total of 40$(I bought 3 chips for 3.50 each)
Were it not for this forum (your builds included)I wouldnt even attempt this project.
I am still working on sawing that huge sink in half.
I did get more AA nihm cells now I can make a +/-12V supply that is rechargable.

QUESTION what would be the VA rating of 16 AA nihm cells rated at 2600mah each?
I tried to read the 12Vpack of 8 but it fried the fuse in my DMM I guess I could check one and multiply by 16.
Doesnt the 2600mah mean the total current before the battery is dead?
Even at 200ma a piece thats 1.6 amps per pack x2 would be 3.2amps at 24V is about 50VA.
Did I do that right? Even if I could get 1-2 hrs use at 30-40 watts that would be perfect for my uses.
