How do you get Mark Knopfler's tone? especially money for nothing?

Overdrive?

you can get a reasonable approximation of the money for nothing sound by using a whawha
set to a fixed position with a bit of overdrive. depending on your guitar it even be sufficient
to roll off the treble of the bridge pickup. and, naturally: fingerpicking.

I have no idea how to get that tone, but I'm glad I'm not the only one that wants it.  I love money for nothing.

Sounds good but i dont have a wha pedal.

Is their any particluar box that i could make to get the sound?

like a cirtan type of overdrive?

You'll need a wah for MFN. Nothing else does it. Sorry.

You can just build a wah circuit, put it in a regular box, then just use a regular pot to set the wah to the right freq. It's been done before by folks who like that "cocked wah" sound for leads, or MFN of course.

I've been thinking about building a wah like that with the knob on the top just like a gain knob or something, that way you can have that "cocked wah" sound at any stage of it.

the ultimate "cocked wha" is the old morley that everybody hates. it has a gain knob and a
sparate dpdt switch next to the rocking plate to turn it on and off.

Do you have a schematic for it?  That sounds like a good idea to me.

they are such a cool company that you'll find the schems for everything they ever produced athttp://www.morleypedals.com/downloads.html. the one i talked about is the PWA(http://www.morleypedals.com/pwaes.pdf). the circuit's very simple and it gives a massive boost.
