Amplifier Discussion / Re: Supplier for IRF230's?
March 11, 2012, 06:20:38 PM
Also have quite a few MJI5003's still not sure if those would work - 140V 250W.
IRF230's are 200V 75W. I didn't notice it until now, 2 of the 4 transistors in there were RFM10P15's and not IRF230's.

Here ya go, its a Peavey Megabass. Already have a limiter. IRF230's were soldered in through a heatsink, even the screws were soldered in to the board.

Found IRF250's at $6.50 ea, will those work?

I never mounted a transistor like that, a pic would be great.

Couldn't find a schematic for this anywhere. I think this amp was plugged into the wrong ohm cab. I tested all the IRF230's and they all failed. There are also 4 3 legged transistors (one next to each IRF230) that have the middle legs snipped off. I tested those in circuit they conduct one way only so I assume those are good.

The only place I found any IRF230's in stock they are $13.49 a piece, any better sources out there? I need 4 for a Megabass head.

GREAT IDEA!

Determined there is preamp power, problem lies on the microprocessor board. Well, it was worth a try! I was trying to get this going for my cousin, looks like he's due for a new amp or he'll have to take it to a Line 6 dealer to have the board replaced. Oh how I hate these things.

Amplifier Discussion / Line 6 Spider II not lighting up
February 09, 2012, 07:30:31 AM
I am trying to repair a DOA Line 6 Spider II 210, amp powers up, I can hear the speakers have power, so the power amp section is working. However, none of the lights are coming on and when I tested the cable connector goint to the preamp board no power was present. Transformer checks out fine, and all resistors on the power supply board are good. Bridge rectifier is conducting one way only like its suppossed too. The only thing I question is the little ST 2N 5401 transistor being good on that board. Anyone have this issue with these amps and what should I be looking for?

Here it is finally had time to record an mp3 of the Sunn Stage Lead. It was early morning so my chops weren't up to speed yet..lol.

Took it cautious like you said and now I'm rockin! It started to sound better the more I played it probably the caps getting fully charged. It has really good sound I have to admit I am surprised. Sounded even better with an overdrive pedal. I gave it the run through for about an hour, put the knobs back on and the amp is back in the cabinet. Thanks for all the help in locating the issues Mr Fahey and Loudthud, I learned a lot on this one and gained a ton of knowledge in the process. I'll get a mp3 up soon so you can hear how it sounds!

Sounds good I will give it a try tonight. ST is what I put in there , I have a local electronics shop that is pretty well stocked. Thanks for all of your help, I will let you know how it goes.

Got it figured out, its making great sound now on the limiter, the light bulb gets brighter the louder the amp volume is turned or how hard you play. Haven't plugged it in straight to the outlet yet.

Replaced c123 and r141 was a little out of spec so replaced that too. C1 tested fine. Fired it up on the limiter and had rough sound so I Shut it down and cleaned all the jacks And pots with Deoxit. Sound is still intermittent.

I put in new R140 and R142, also soldered in the 100 ohm resistors in parallel with the 22 ohm ones. Reading a more stable 501mv at Q1 and 489mv at Q2. I haven't tried it yet but will later tonight. Problems only occur once the speaker is plugged in so hopefully its a go this time which makes me wonder about that cap in C1. The local parts guy didn't have that in stick so may have to order one if its the issue.
