Hey Bigbeck
I remember you from SEwatt.com
welcome to the board.
Be sure to check out DIYstompboxes too, lots of good people there,Joe Cool included.

WOW see what I miss when I'm gone  :'(
I still havent etched my boards for my 3886 yet, been perfecting a pre amp, building pedals ,ect, studying.
This would have been nice,oh well.
Last I heard the board was compramised and being used for phishing and stuff.
Well nice to see you still have it going Joe.

Hope to see some nice builds from these kits you gave away is there a thread for that ?

Thanks guys !!!!
I am hoping to feel better soon as well ,its hard to do much of anything feeling the way I do.
Thanks for the kind wishes, very appreciated.

I have been extremely sick this last couple of weeks,go back to DR in a couple of days.
So I may not make this contest :(
I havent been able to do much and putting an amp together is way down on my list at the moment.
The one I saw above looks really nice...
If I start to feel better before the deadline I will try to throw one together.
I already had a plan in mind for one  :duh
If not then oh well, maybe next contest I can enter something.

Keep up the good work guys, and I hope to see some more entries from other people too.
:tu:

BTW I didnt want to sign up for yet another site to view those other pics of the second entry would you mind hosting them somewhere else so I can view them a little easier ?

Interesting video.
I like the Humor, nice repupose of an all tube amp.

A little more time to put something together would be nice ?
How about extending it until Feb 1st ?

Hey Phatt
VERY IMPRESSIVE INDEED
That sounded like a high end guitar rig for sure.
I am just curious why the reverb is first in the signal chain?
At any rate it definatly works good that way.
What is your noise floor like ?
And what part of the chain contributes the most noise ?
The single coils or one of the other pieces of equipment ?
Thanks for sharing I definetly enjoyed seeing/hearing your set up!!!!

Yes thats exactly what I mean.
You should note that the ROG work/specs were using the 386 that only puts out a 1/2 watt at 9v ,hence 1 watt BTL,for the Little GemMKII .
The 386LM-4/386BD is 1 watt at 9v (I believe it's been awhile)
Download the data sheets and folllow the graphs ,You can get a good idea where 18V
will put you output wise.
I would stop at 12V though just to save having heat issues and chip failure.
16V seemed pretty stable (again if my memeory serves)I shoulda took notes...
But if your really adventurous you can use some heat sinks and run them at 18V.

I personaly think there are much better tube amps for re-amping than the P1 or High Octane.
This of course is just IMO,but I felt the high octane was lacking...
I would suggest something from Marshall or HiWatt even the tried and true 5E3,which doesnt really need re-amping.
Maybe a Firefly type amp or a modded Valve Jr? a Champ ?
I would search Phatts,Armstrongs, and JM Fahey posts for your answers.
Good Luck , I hope for a positive outcome and will be watching this thread.

12v is the safe max V for the 386 chip.
I have however had good results running them at 18v with a heatsink on the chip.
I also have run two of them BTL mode at 18v and its quite impressive at that point.
I would use the highest output 386 the 386LM-4 or the 386-D and run them at 12V with at least AA batteries. C size being optimal if you have the room.
Two 386LM-4 chips in BTL mode at 12V will give you close to 3 watts ouput more than enough for a practice amp.
Use a breadboard and experiment for yourself, have fun.

What caps are you talking about ?
And seriously the wiring on that is a mess, and probably part of the reason for your hum.
I cant believe how they did that,It was obviously to save labor, using harnesses to connect the tube pcb to the main pcb.
But the lead and dress is suffering horribly from it.
Not to mention the tubes look way to close together.I would guess they are part of the problem as well.
You already have the most expensive parts needed to build a good amp.
The tubes ,chassis, and most costly the trannies.
You could salvage the pots and the "candy" caps (the brown ones) as well.
Maybe even the filter caps too.
Ditch that and build an 18 watt Marshall,or something similar.
Using an eyelet board and some proper lead dress.
Otherwise I doubt you will ever be happy with that.
Yeah they (techs) try to fix it for you.
But if they told you,a new amp was needed you would just think they were trying to scam you (probly why they havent said that here)
So rather than risk losing some work in todays economy - they do what you ask and try.
You can polish a turd all you want....but its still a turd.

The Newcomer's Forum / Re: Crate GFX30 Schematic
January 07, 2010, 09:31:34 PM
I wasn't asking you to post it > so anyone could download it.
I asked if you could PM it to me so I could further my knowledge, compare with my GX20M.
If you dont feel comfortable with that than I understand.
I dont own a GFX30,I was just looking to learn more by studying an existing design.
I love Crates, more for sentimental reasons than sound quality.
But I think they are excellent amps to learn with.

Good luck with your repairs

Hey could you PM that schematic to me if you get it?
I have the Crate GX20M and it uses the TDA2040 for the power section.
I recently ordered some of the TDA20XX series from Tayda Electronics for about a 1$
apiece - YES 1$ or so each.
It took almost a month to get em (from Bangkok I believe) but I saved a bundle over Mouser (3-4$ each) and the like.
They have amazing prices http://www.taydaelectronics.com/servlet/StoreFront
After my first order they sent me a 20% discount for the following month unfortunatly
I didnt have the funds to order again so soon.

Tubes and Hybrids / Re: First Hybrid
January 03, 2010, 08:48:38 PM
Ah yes it did run away w/o the ground reference, caused me quite a headache .
That has been fixed.
The NFB works great when the MV is at full volume.
Tames it just enough, but if there is a better way I am all for trying.
The FX loop was for trying the pre-amp with other amps more than adding FX but works both ways, still not very user friendly unless you know how its wired.
This should really be a two channel amp instead of having those switches to take the pre from clean to over the top but I was working with in the confines of the EVJ chassis and PT.
Thanx for the feedback any revisions are more than welcome.

Hey JM sorry its been awhile, been busy.
Here is a schematic,This is the original I think I changed a couple of small things since in the FX loop and clipping section nothing major.
No MP3s yet,
