Sign sign... everywhere a sign

Not sure what happens if I try to measure resistance on a live circuit  ::)

Amplifier Discussion / Re: Watts vs Volume (db)

Quote from: g1 on April 05, 2014, 01:37:52 PMIn car audio competitions you measure SPL.  Does a given system with a 200W amp sound twice as loud as the same system with a 100W amp?

I got tickled when I read this  :) as much as I groan when I hear them thumpers driving by I am intrigued by the idea of a contest which I presume the goal is to be the loudest?

If so I think I will keep an eye out for any local event like that it would be fun to watch

That is some very nice work congrats  8)

Beautiful amp thanks for the pics  :)

I finally figured out that rms and peak and peak to peak might actually be useful  :P

I was looking ahead in my work book and I have to have a voltage ⚡ generator and connect a 6v p-p.

So I was like huh? I don't have a voltage generator  :'( maybe they mean a Variac?

Meanwhile I was looking at my trusty Hickok function generator wondering if I could use that but didn't know if it could supply six volts ac peak to peak.

I didn't want to fool with my scope so I attached my multimeter changed it to AC and increased the output (on sine wave) but then knew I had to do some math.

I divided 6 by 1.404? But that wasn't quite right so I did 2.808 and that was it.

But something that still 🤔 perplexes me is this:

Is a sine wave from a function generator alternating current?

Thanks guys you ROCK  8)

I was gonna name this thread something like the trials and tribulations of tubes
:P
Then it got me thinking about a particular TV show episode.

Then I was gonna post a picture joking that it showed a rare sighting of some of our top ssguitar techs

I can only speculate who is who.  :)

Maybe that tube being not lit up doesn't mean anything idk

But forgot to add I did have the reverb out of it idk if that matters

Newly acquired Savage Rohr 15

When I got it it seemed to work ok both channels four inputs...

I thought it didn't seem to have much gain but figured it was what it was.

I guess it had/has a problem because later it seemed to get quieter and quieter and finally one channel appearing inop and the other both volume knobs can be max and strumming a guitar 🎸 can be heard at low volume.

I worked up enough courage to take a look and perhaps see something.

I looked at the chassis but did not touch or 🥢 chopstick anything.

Also I reconnected the speaker before powering on.

Btw here is the tubes

When I powered it on I noticed one 12ax7 was not glowing as well as the uncovered tube on the end which I presume to be a 12at7 (?)

I guess I made a big mistake by not swapping a preamp tube to see if it was the tube or the chassis.

I carefully put everything back together and not too eager to further investigate until I can watch hours of reruns on YouTube about at least some basics of working on and around these units.

I also have read a bunch of the threads in this section so I'm expecting to be told check voltage ⚡ on pins xx on vx.

 :P

But alas I think this is gonna be on the back burner for a while.  I just don't yet have the stomach for poking around this amp.

Thanks

Thank you sir !!

I'm still struggling mightily with it.

Anyhow here is my new milliamp reading super duper current probe.

This time if I make a boo boo it has a 500 mA fuse.

Speaking of struggling I did a crappy job on this banana 🍌 plug.
Maybe it wasn't supposed to be soldered idk

Ok I finally got a sound out of it
It actually sounds AWESOME 👍😎

one thing to note before you toss this through a window....the waah pedal is volume  :-X
If the pedal is all the way down it's not gonna work
:-X  :'(
Also I had to use 1/4 L Mono out to amp.

As far as all the other stuff my head is spinning it's gonna take some time

Yesterday a coworker brought a line6 pod 500 to work he said take it home and try it out.
I get it home and can't even figure out how to connect it to an amp.  Watched one video about it and still got confused.  I will Google it some more today.

Guitar in is easy enough.  But then there were two outlets "unbalanced mono" each left and right.

Uughhh  >:(

I get it that there's all kind of crazy stuff people can do that's why all the extra jacks etc

But I'm not looking to be the next Tom Scholz
I just want to hook it up like a pedal and get some overdrive and delay flange etc

Thank you sir seems like from what I have read that you enjoy pedals.  Now I understand why because I had gotten away from them as too much trouble but I have a renewed interest in them now I really had fun playing through all of them last night.

I need some help dialing in the delay pedal though I couldn't seem to get happy with my attempt to obtain a good setting.  It also has echo which gets out of hand quickly

Nm teh dreaded chainsaw liveth  :-X

You cannot view this attachment.

It almost knocked me out too

I had it on the lead channel
I wanted to hear what it would do to the clean channel (of my audition chorus )

I made sure to turn all the volume knobs on the amp all of the way off
I'm standing there and I push the channel select button and I'm hit with the loudest noise I have ever heard  :P

So I reached down and turned down the output knob on the pedal which had been fully clockwise....duh 🤣 o

I was anxious to try them and haven't tried to play through them but the light comes on in three

And I couldn't get the chainsaw pedal to light up but it hasn't been connected to an amplifier at least since the early 90s

They are a bunch of old ordinary pedals but I hope they still work.

Thanks again 👍

Man THANK YOU SIR !! for pointing that out.
:)
I was at work all day and when I got home I ransacked the house looking for a wall wart with a terminal matching the one in this pic from last May

You cannot view this attachment.

The one I tried to use yesterday had a 90 deg on the end of it.  I chased down a couple desktop lamps...no.
Kept looking and finally found it in the bottom of a drawer under a bunch of stuff.

What's crazy is I got this from my friend's junk store told him I needed a 9v adapter he had a mountain of them and handed me this one and I can promise you we were not cognizant of polarity.

Unless...and this was almost twenty years ago...it's possible I had a pedal with me and tried one until it worked...idk...
