Honey Amp / Honey Amp - The tone stack
Last post by joecool85 - November 23, 2022, 12:20:35 PM
The Honey Amp's tone stack is a modified BMP tone stack that was carefully adjusted to match the frequency sweep as closely as possible to the original Vox AC30 Top Boost circuit.  This gives a pronounced mid frequency dip throughout the sweep, while still being able to raise bass and lower treble, or lower bass and raise treble.  With the knob in the center position on the Honey Amp it is similar to a Vox with the Treble cranked and the Bass at roughly 7/10.  With the knob all the way counter clockwise, it is similar to the Vox at noon on both knobs (most folks don't turn down past this anyway from what I understand).  Lastly, with the tone on the Honey Amp turned fully clockwise, it resembles a Vox pretty much cranked on both knobs, and also with a treble booster in front.

Using the excellent "TSC in the web" calculator, you can see this live:

Honey Amp BMP: https://www.guitarscience.net/tsc/bigmuff.htm#RIN=5k&R1=430k&R2=430k&RM=151k&RL=250k&C1=330p&C2=8200p&RM_pot=Linear

Vox: https://www.guitarscience.net/tsc/vox.htm#RIN=717&R1=100k&R2=10k&RT=1M&RB=1M&RL=600k&C1=47p&C2=22n&C3=22n&RB_pot=LogA&RT_pot=LogA

This circuit is meant to be customized, changed, tweaked, and modified which is why I am sharing this information here.  If you find values that suit your taste better, please share, we're always interested in new changes!

As for me, I think I may "soften" the treble side of things for the next version of the circuit.

The only difference between the diodes is the breakdown Voltage. In this amp, the diodes are not being operated anywhere close to the maximum rating so substitution is OK.

Hello,
I am looking at replacing the power transistor bias diodes cr5-8.

Can anyone advise me whether I can substitute the Byv26d diodes for Byv26e in this application?

The Byv2de is easier for me to get hold of and a lot cheaper.

Thanks

Quote from: Tassieviking on November 12, 2022, 09:04:06 AMTo me they look like clipping diodes, stick some sockets in the holes and then you can experiment with led's diodes etc.
If you get a row of SIP sockets you can break them off individually and solder them in.

They might also work as a signal limiter so the signal after this stage stays below a certain level, the led's would start conducting at a certain voltage and thus limit the voltage going to C9 and C10.

I'm going with clipping diodes.  They were left out because the Pignose 30 is a bass amp and, generally speaking, people don't like distortion in their bass amps.  You could throw the diodes in (though I do recommend using sockets as suggested above) and see if you like it.

Actually this amp is a pignose 30/60 which is different from the 30, which is a bass amp. this one, however, is a small combo amp made for guitar that I repaired and turned into just a head unit because the speaker and enclosure were thrashed.

Lots of pictures would be good, with enough pictures of the PCB's we can make a schematic for the amp.
with 575 watts max input and 2 x 15" speakers it must be a decent amp.

It will be interesting to see what output transistors are in it.

I have not gotten into it yet, guessing final blown but we will see.

Thank you !

I'd love to see some pictures, this isn't an amp I'm familiar with.

You may be on your own with that one. :(
What's wrong with it?
