The Newcomer's Forum / Orange Crush 12 repair
March 26, 2018, 06:10:15 PM
Last yr my Orange failed and my local amp guy fixed it by replacing an Opamp chip soldered directly to the board. Now its gone again and I think I can fix it myself Is there any reason not to use an 8 pin socket instead for easy replacement of the chip? Theres only one 8 pin chip that I can see

Fix up the existing radio, turn in to valve amp, build in an SS radio or an SS amp? Retro iPod dock? Even as a piece of furniture its worth keeping but it needs to produce sound I think.

If I want to plug in a guitar and iPod at the same time can I just connect the 2 inputs in parallel?

The Newcomer's Forum / Charging questions
January 23, 2018, 07:36:59 PM
What charging voltage is generally used for batteries of different voltages? for example I'd like to be able to charge a 9v PP3 while a power supply is plugged in ro my LM386 amp. Also my 12V Black and Decker drill needs a new charger as the original one is only giving me 5V when plugged in to the mains whereas it used to be 15V as far as I know. I am charging it now using a 12v power supply.

The Newcomer's Forum / Potentiometer materials

Trying to pick pots for amp projects. Any view on track material i.e. carbon, cermet, conductive plastic etc? Longevity, price, noise etc.? Trying to choose what local vendors can supply me at reasonable cost. Farnell and Radionics both have good delivery costs to Ireland for example.

The Newcomer's Forum / First real build. LM386.
December 20, 2017, 04:11:47 AM
I mentioned this in other posts but heres a rundown as a novice on my LM386 build. I call it the Bearskin amp. Its a veroboard project very similar to the Little Gem , Ruby, and Smokey amps. No internal speaker. 1K gain pot plus a IK volume control on the output side.
Overall very pleased with this build. The only issue is the volume pot. It is linear slope but still seems more loggy if u know what I mean. Admittedly the quality of the pot is not great but maybe I need a different resistance or slope?

Amplifier Discussion / Capacitor conducting DC?
December 14, 2017, 09:24:10 AM
Just troubleshooting an LM386 amp build on veroboard very similar to the Ruby Amp on runoffgroove.com. (it worked on breadboard!) when i do a continuity test one of the capacitors seems to conduct. Is this normal or does it indicate a bad capacitor? Its 100uF electrolytic.

Amplifier Discussion / USB charging
November 20, 2017, 07:17:14 AM
Lots of stuff is USB chargeable these days. Is it feasible or safe to build in USB charging to a diy amp or other builds?

Probably been done before but...
Headphone amp + fm mps transmitter +  any FM Radio = wireless guitar amp

Works well with my Technics HiFi. Using a better headphone amp (eg Vox.ones) and transmitter might improve matters. Need to keep amp volume low to stop the transmitter clipping. Little chance of hurting the receiver as the FM signal is weak enough. Plus the neighbours can hear  my killer riffs if they tune in to
106.7 FM
