Amplifier Discussion / Power amp clipping
April 29, 2009, 03:03:35 PM
I have a functional TDA2030 PCB that I made right from the datasheet but it clips with minimal input.  I am using a 12.5-0-12.5 2 amp transformer and a pair of 4700uf caps in the power supply. Here is the preamp schematic that I am currently using.

I am only using it up to the volume pot with out the extra gain stage on the breadboard.  LTSpice says that I should only have about a 400-600mv output after the BM tonestack but I can readily make the power amp distort.

Will this lead to premature failure of the power amp chip?? From what I get out of the datasheet I should be able to get closer to 890mv input to get the maximum power output.

I'm learning about SS amps and have a TDA2030 power amp funtional and waiting for a preamp.  When it is ready a want to build a little combo amp.  I've built and given away several 386 amps. Everyone likes them but they want them to be louder. I want to be able to give my friends something a little more powerful that doesn't cost me a bunch of money.  So my question is where to get affordable but functional 6"-8" guitar speakers for little practice amps?

I thought there was a [ic section but I couldn't find it, so here ya go.

Amplifier Discussion / LM1875 vs. TDA2050
March 28, 2008, 02:18:33 PM
I got a couple of 12.5v-0-12.5v transformers from parts express because they were on sale and planned on using them in a TDA20xx amp.  Is the LM1875 a better or louder chip than the TDA2050?  With a 1x12 cabinet would either be acceptable to practice with a drummer?

Amplifier Discussion / Where to place reverb??
February 15, 2008, 02:13:58 PM
I am going to build a Stage Center reverb from GeneralGuitarGadgets.com and incorporate it into my next build.  Any suggestions on where in the signal path it should be for the best performance?

Amplifier Discussion / Anybody use an OPA541
January 29, 2008, 08:33:58 PM
I was looking around for chips to use with a transformer I was recycling and came across the datasheet for the OPA541.  It seems pretty straight forward, almost like a big 386.

Amplifier Discussion / Recycled trannies useful??
December 05, 2007, 07:06:02 PM
I got a hold of a couple of battery back-up (the ones for your computer) transformers.  I'm guessing that they are 12-14 volt and maybe 7-10 amp.  Would this be something that I could use for a chipamp?  I am only a little bit familiar with power supply's.  Is it possible to build a suitable power supply with a simple but beefy transformer?  Thanks for any info.  John

Schematics and Layouts / Complete project??
October 27, 2007, 01:34:04 PM
How about a complete project?  Schematics, layouts, suggested mods and parts list,  all the info for a novice to build there own SS guitar amp with relative ease.  I built a tube amp from AX84.com and it was very easy to get good results with some basic skills and a little help.

Here's a link to the P1-Extreme over at AX84

I was going through an old organ someone had donated to me and found 4 ?transistors? marked A7607 / EP1844A.  I tried a search which usually works and came up fairly blank.  Anyone here know where I can at least cross-referance these things to see if they're  worth making a project with them?
They are attached to some small heatsinks and there's a transformer in the chassis make me wonder about the power output af them.

Preamps and Effects / 2 footswitchable channels
April 15, 2007, 03:40:57 PM
Hello everyone.  This is my first post here.  I have already successfully built a one channel tube amp with good results.  Now I wanted to try a 2 channel (1 clean 1 dirty) SS guitar amp with a footswitch probably around 50 watts.  I think I will use the lm3886 power amp from chipamp.com but what about the preamp?  All i've come across is 1 channel fairly simple tonestacked preamps.  Any recomendations?  Thank for your help in advance.
